Has anyone built a diesel kit? Not just an off roader either.
Toe-rag V10 diesel anyone?
In a 7?
I know, I know, it'd be too heavy up front, I just meant something light. So how about in a mid engined lightweight something or other? Mojo, Libra, Ultima?

Well VAG group do a 180bhp V6, imagine that in a Cobra!
Don't know the torque figures, but I recon it'll trounce most (if not all) V8 petrol torque figures.
Or for the lightweight car there's always the 1.9l 4 cyclinder with the ability to kick out 150bhp.
Diesels start looking kind of attractive now, don't they.

Well, Audi have talked about using diesel power in their next Le Mans car.
There's a VW Golf GT-TDI PD or however the scrabble letters fell that day that enters the VW cup and a few other race series I think...
On a more kit car oriented tack, I found this talking about using an AX TD as a donor for an ultra efficient kit: www.benerridge.freeserve.co.uk/economy4.htm although he goes on to use a moped I think.
Also found this oil burner for sale: www.findit.co.uk/cars/kitcar/cars/928803.htm
I'd say the problem with diesel in a kit is that they tend to be high torque, low power and as such have long gearing. The block itself tends to be much heavier than a petrol to cope with the higher compression ratio. I doubt these characteristics would suit all that many kits.
It would certainly be intersting to build a GT of some sort using a high output diesel motor from a bigger car...

Aren't Lotus or GM working on a diesel sports car
I think you probably mean the Opel / Vauxhall Eco Speedster:

Being based on the VX220 which in turn is based on the Elise, it's had input from both companies.
VW have practically done it themselves:

In answer to Den's question, no, not had a reply from Vince yet, but give it some time.
That’s cool.
Graham, I wonder if you know Kris Brown? He was a director of Unique Autocraft Ltd who made the original Python until production ceased in the the early 1990’s. I’ve lost contact with him. I’d like to know if the transfer of Python to RV Dynamics was ‘official’. Similarly I’d like to learn his view on Fib’s (or Mr Financier) selling AF Sports through a business called ‘Unique Autocraft’. My understanding is that both names were simply ‘adopted’ rather than purchased, but I don’t know and would like to hear from Kris because he should know the score.

As for deisel engined kit cars, several Fiesta based Quantums have been built using the turbo diesel engine.
I ran a P100 with one of those engines. Damn good it was too, and very economical.

A project for one of the magazines then?
Den!
Want to stump up the cash for a KitCar exclusive?
I realise this subject has hyjacked the thread a bit.
How about it Den. Let's see you put something in your mag about it.
There seems to be interest.
Has there ever been something done like it before?

Build an automatic diesel car and track day it!
Not exactly on in main-line is it?
I thought Mark was pulling my leg

Apparently this is serious, so to answer seriously.
Kit Car is always prepared to feature the weird and wonderful.
A few months ago we ran an excellent feature on a Lotus Elise converted to run on household ‘mains’ gas. Very interesting with 200 miles worth of it costing only a couple of quid.
We’ve featured Quantum and Westfield diesel cars, so there’s no prejudice.
If anybody wanted to submit an article on this or any other related subject, we’d publish it. Subject to it being reasonably well written, technically correct and most importantlyinteresting.
