I've just bought the latest Kit Car mag as I do every month and I'm a bit bemused. Normally I buy it to have a laugh at the various mistakes spread liberally through its pages but I feel like the joke's on me now.

With all the 'Peter Filby ate my hamster' stories gone, it seems Den is having trouble filling the pages. Out of a boastful 260 pages, there's doesn't seem to be much reading matter - a single-seater, a Madgwick that's been featured before and a Mini being notable inclusions.

The cover claim of a 112 page 'special report' turns out to be a reprinted catalogue. This from a man so opposed to misleading claims!

To top it all, the price has gone up by 20p. With so many ads and claims of vastly increased sales, I wonder why this is? Just my initial impressions.

Ron,
The cover claim actually reads “Special Report: Massive 112 page Rally Design Catalogue!”.

You must have been really p155ed off when you got it home and noticed that the Special Report was in fact a Massive 112 page Rally Design Catalouge.

Did you ask for your money back?

No I didn't ask for my money back, but I'll keep it in my pocket next month. I've just counted 62 pages of features. That leaves 198 pages of ads which is disappointing to say the least, especially when the cover claims "260 page value".

No doubt you were hoping the 20p increase would go unnoticed when you are offering such great value.

To be fair to Den, even with the 20p increase, he is still no dearer than his main rival WK?...........

Also, I would imagine January/February is a bit like the "silly season", with not a lot going on in the Kit car world, and the number of people wanting to sell their cars in the classifieds down compared to the summer........

BigRon, why didn't you do what most people who are undecided as to whether they want the mag or not do....

Read it on Mr W.H Wmith's premises, then buy it if you liked it, or put it back if you weren't happy?!

Ron,
We are upset today it seems.

I honestly believe that anybody reading the cover would appreciate that the 260 total pages claimed was inclusive of the 112 pages of catalogue. After taking that into account, the 62 pages of editorial sits with 86 pages of advertisements which, if anything, is a better ratio than most magazines.

As for the price increase, it’s nearly 2 years since our last one and evidences nothing more than inflation.

I appreciate that the content of this particular issue isn’t, let me say ‘the best’. Some are better than others, and I think you can appreciate that there’s bound to be some variability between one and the next. Wacky’s right concerning the time of year too.

Having said all this, if you feel misled, just send me an e-mail with your address and I’ll send you the next magazine free.

Deal?

I'm confused?

Are you complaining about the price increase or that Den has done what he said he was going to, by removing any bits referring to WK?

The offer is open to anybody in this position. I’d like to know the precise nature of the grievance though.

In order that I might understand exactly what the problem is.

Neither. It's the fact that the cover boasts about how big the magazine is, while the editorial content is very light - 62 pages out of 260.

Although he may help to address that if next month's (free ) copy shows an improvement!

I won't see it until mon or tues anyway. It's always around 3 (working)days later than is advertised down 'ere.

Got competitor today though.

There is only one thing for it. I guess I'll have to subscribe. I do keep threatening.

As for the content. I am not sad enough to count every page of editorial etc, but I do think there is still more editorial in Kit Car than WK? There is also more classified ads, more advertising and therefore more pages. I think that's how the maths works?

The Almanac had more pages though . .

Flintstone and Ferg,
You ever had one of those days

The magazine was posted yesterday (I hope – confirming this now). They should plop on your door-mat in the morning.

Apparently there were problems printing the carrier sheets, so labels had to be used instead. That caused the delay.

Sorry!

Den.

Obviously I am sad then Just for fun (I don't get out much) I counted the editorial pages in WK and there's 58 out of 122. So there's much less space given to advertising revenue than KC (but roughly the same amount of editorial) yet it's 10p cheaper. How does that maths work? Maybe it really does sell 500,000 copies a month

Edited to say that I included KC's self promotion on the Cobra mag when I counted the pages in KC earlier. See Den, I am good to you

More pages, same editorial = bigger magazine, so I suppose it looks better value for money.

Who cares, buy 'em both, read about same kits (sometimes anyway) and make your own a balanced view of the product on test.

Otherwise buy one and get one point of view.
