Road going Hawk...on eBay
I'm pretty sure I know that car; its last owner was an acquaintance of mine, I think.

If it is the same car, then the asking price represents a £6K mark up from the advertised asking price last time around.

Yes, that was back in 2007.
The current price of the basic Hawk kit (inc. VAT) is now £13,899.60
but you don't get the rear spoiler, roof wing, fuel tanks, door window slider kit, headlamp raising mechanisms, so with that lot included it's £16,738.80
This car has the replica Stradale seats, which are available at £1,338.00
It also has a set of replica Campagnolo Hawk coffin spoke wheels at £1,897.20

The total for that lot is £19,974.00
Then you need the engine and box, suspension, electrics, paint job, hours to build etc.

I reckon the price this red car was 4 years ago was a bit on the cheap side and the price it is now is more realistic?

If it's the same car (it's the same manufacturer, engine and colour, and the date it was last sold would tie in, but I honestly can't remember the registration), then it wasn't the best example you'll ever come across and the asking price back then was realistic/optimistic. Indeed, it took quite a while to sell, at the time and I suspect that the actual selling price will have been a bit below what was being asked.

Judging by the e-bay description of gearbox and bodywork issues, it isn't exactly flawless now... haggle hard if you're thinking of buying it. wink

If it is the same car (and I could be wrong - it might just be coincidence or my memory playing tricks on me), then the surname of the previous owner on the logbook should be R*****ts.

Yes, sorry - quite correct; no 's' at the end.

Sounds like it is the same car then, unless it's a monumental coincidence.

If you feel you must buy it, haggle like hell...

I'm not looking to buy, I've already got one.
If you're buying through ebay, you can't strictly haggle with a buy it now.
Another thing is that it's the only example for sale at this time.
The price range is going to narrow buyers down though. If it was LHD it might have gone by now?

The issue with the box doesn't devalue the car to a great extent. It's based on a more common Alfa/Lancia design, and there's a spare in any case.
The bodywork issues you need to take on the chin too. The £100k+ originals are usually rougher than a lot of replicas. The build quality was never there in the first place, and they've been around a lot longer.

The particular car was Graham Bates' own car. Graham fabricated and developed a lot of special parts for early Transformers(Hawks). So it was originally put together by someone who really knew what he was doing. I've never seen the car myself though, so seeing is believing.

Not aimed specifically at you, Chris - intended as generalised advice for anyone reading this forum. hippy

I'm sure if you were looking to buy, you wouldn't have been drawing everyone else's attention to it!?

A spare of unknown condition. But I have this general rule of thumb that if something on a car for sale is easily fixed, then I expect the vendor to fix it, if he wants top price for the car. If he wants me to take pain and the risk, I expect him to take the financial hit.

The car certainly doesn't owe its owner the asking price, and it's certainly not perfect, so if i were in the market for such a car I would see no reason to hand him a £6K profit without blinking.

Ah, but they're originals. wink

I almost bought one about 10-12 years ago, for about £32K, IIRC... I'd have had to go halves with a mate at the time to afford it, and we decided it would be to much of a risk to our friendship if one of us stuffed it or blew the engine up, though!

What I failed to predict was Mr Hrabalek's influence on the market, obviously!

Though it's had a change of engine and gearbox and enough wear and tear to shag the interior (via 10 owners in a mere 20,000 miles, if the ad is to be believed?) and to develop other significant faults, the last time I knew of it, in the intervening period?

Yep, those are all good points.
As far as build quality goes, they're all a bit naff. That one's likely to be better than most.
I know the seller will be making money, but that's how it is now. I know a similar car that was bought and sold (with hardly any of the car changing) for similar amounts within about 4 to 5 years.

We all saw those £30k+ originals and now wished we'd gone halves.
The ex Don Pither green Stradale went for £34k at an H&H auction in 2002. and then sold for 89k in 2007.

Let's see?, how many hours have you worked on it?
Do you really want to know what I think it's worth?

I'm thinking of selling mine too, but honestly, this would be to buy food.

Elliott, can I have some of your pop corn?

There might be even more interest in them, if it was possible to join the Stratos forum. Something's up with that forum's registration and approval system. frown

I saw what I was sure was a Hawk (Stradale) in Felixstowe. So I tried to join and add it to the 'informal register'. Ho hum...

Right, £21k if you're in a mad rush.
£27k if you want to wait and see.

It's nice that you've got these photos for reference?:

Interesting - I was thinking £25k no offers. Just need to decide if I can learn to love it again or not. This spring/summer will be it.

Indeed, nice to have some professional shots of the car. Got that PPC article on it as well.

Thanks Chris, appreciate your thoughts. And yes, did honestly want to know what you thought! What I might think mine is worth may not bear any relationship to the market....and I know you watch these things closely.

...or perhaps everyone seriously in the market for a Stratos rep. is Googling 'Stratos replica for sale' and coming up with this thread?
