It came to me from people trying to get pre iva past built RH kits ready for iva not just the light weight but other steel and stainless steelkits , iva people[what level I don't know ] are saying mono cars will not be accepted for test as there is no aceptable measure of safe construction !!!,wether I have the wrong interpritation or I don't know may be someone like Singlecoil on here has better info ? as to the RH light weight at least 4 got through but only after serious mods .I run an early s/s mono RH and have only had 2 minor probs in 35000 miles both easily rectified .Sensible comments please

Ditto the Midas which is in fact one of the very few kit cars to have undergone a proper crash test. Needless to say it passed so errr yep I think someone's got it very wrong somewhere and especially given that just about every production car is a monocoque too.

There is the answer in one way the Midas was crash tested ! how many more have been I would think that very few if any!

There is zero requirement for crash testing. Yes it might be nice but to be brutally honest kit cars are *not* as safe as everyday mass production cars. Many are copies of cars that would not be legal if mass produced now and the safety requirements are significantly lower.

If you are purely basing your "monocoques will fail" on the Robin Hood's failing then you are wrong, that's just because they're not up to standard and should not be extended to all monocoques.

Read the IVA manual for yourself.

I used to be involved in testing and I'd like to remind people that tests are simply minimal acceptable standards. What you will find though is that when there are tests then many many manufacturers will build to just scrape through the tests as any more than that is wasted money and therefore comes off the profit margin. Don't be fooled into thinking because something is tested then it must be safer than something that is not.

As it happens I did actually have a crash in a kit car in which I went off the side of a bridge going through 2 concrete posts and 3 steel railings in my Spartan a long long time ago. The car was then rebuilt and driven every day for nigh on 12 years after that. I am absolutely certain that a production car would not have been able to take that.

If you really want to make a car safe then stick a dagger pointing at the driver in the centre of the steering wheel then you'll find a lot safer cars. I followed a total idiot the other day all the way from Salisbury right into Bournemouth who tail gated every car. He was easy to follow as he was the idiot 5 feet from the car in-front. He broke several speed limits and got flashed by a number of drivers including one he did an overtake in-front of nearly causing a head on. The car was a 57 plate Astra. I had words with him in-front of his wife/girlfriend at the end of his journey where he clearly hadn't even noticed that I'd followed him right into the car park where he met her for a drink in the pub. So as I say testing really does not have a real life relationship to car safety. Oh the dipstick also had Nürburgring sticker and various marshals club stickers on the rear of the car plus the naff Vauxhall VXR t shirt probably all contributed to the lack of safety and hazards he presented to other road users as these were not tested wink

very interesting Mickky3. I have reviewed you pics with dimensions in the previous posts and through, that it was very close to the GT40 kit chassis dimensions that i have, some areas like the side pod is wider with a narrower central seating area, yet when i look at that pic it does not look that different at all. would love to see more.

is this going under a GT40 body?
