Does it still exist? It was originally a 3000M road test car, then that plate was on a convertible M for Martin Lilley in the mid 1970s, and I believe that car ended up as the Malaysian 5000S racer which CWR prepare and look after.
So bits of the original car may be all over the world.

Oliver.

Oliver, wasn't it on the one-off 427 engineered racer that supposedly was built for Martin Lilley (actually never was if you talk to the man himself), or am I thinking of some other FICTIONAL story. A creation in the Midlands in the 80's I believe.

As a 3000M it was road tested in Custom Car in 1973, amongst other magazines.

Evening gents and thank you for the replies.
In fact Oliver you may be able to assist further, my car as you may or may not know, was also a TVR press and publicity car and featured in a seventies girly (tits & bums) type magazine.
The reason I was trying to find the owner of XKU 3L is my son, for my birthday, managed to aquire for me a copy of Penthouse magazine from 1974 in the hope it was he copy with my car in, but, unfourtunately its not mine but XKU.

Now I can find good use for the magazine i have, but would really like to trace a copy of the mag with my car in.

I know Mr Venn has a page from the magazine in which my car featured which has a drawing of an M series car, but does anyone know what magazine and date it was published?

Thanks Adrian, I thought you had only the picture, not the full article.
I'll take a look at what's available, it doesn't help these mags being advertised as " pre loved", maybe I'll find a laminated copy.
Meanwhile if the current owner of the Penthouse car is about I have that magazine.

Morning Jon,
I would need to mortgage the house a few time over if the Philip Castle artwork came up for sale, my stuck together copy of that picture floats/has floated around the office for many years, it is in a very sad state.
I had to buy a new copy.

From what I can remember and after seeking confirmation from Mike Penny, the 'prototype' 3000S that I owned for a while had originally been 'XKU 3L'. The car was first of all a 3000M, then was attacked (By the factory for Martin)and rendered into a crude convertible with a small rear seat and aeroscreens. Eventually it was sold to Harry Johnson who was a long term TVR fan and friend of the factory. He modified the car substantially to use it for sprints and hillclimbs before eventually running out of steam with it! It was then rebodied with a more conventional 3000S type body (though not the same having different doors, rear end, no proper bootlid, and a standard M dash)and re-registered as a 1978 car (JHG 891S).
My understanding of the Far East racer is that it was a completely new car which had simply been given that original reg as an indentity.
I stand to be corrected by those who know differently however!! I must admit that the older I get the more difficult it is to remember these kind of details, selling TVRs for 30+ years is taking its toll!!
Best regards to all, Tony

Sounds like you are on the right track for finding the magazine, not one I've seen.

Tony's story of the original XKU3L sounds about right, I remember something in Sprint many years ago by Harry Johnson about his car and that there was a link between the two cars. Having seen the Malaysian 5000S a couple of years ago, I doubt very much if any of that was around in 1973.

So as I thought, original bits of XKU3L may well be spread across the world...

Oliver.

Well I've now placed an order for the Mayfare magazine, thanks Adrian. Interesting story re XKU Tony, was nothing ever sraightforward with TVR?
I wonder if the owner of JHG 891S is aware of its history, or bits of it anyway.

As an aside the article in Penthouse is titled 'What's red hot & hairy' and is by a Randolph McCook.

Its not the only hairy thing in the magazine. yikes

Tony,
Do you have any pictures of the 3000S when it had aero screens?

I have been idly surfing today and ended up here, on the second thread regarding 3000S prototypes! I hope this will catch the eyes of the original posters, as I have a photo of AKU 3L after it was re-registered and split up by the factory on completion of the prototypes - it metamorphosed as:

As already mentioned, the car was stripped with the bits put in a corner for all to plunder. Harry Johnson indeed bought what was left and I helped him re-build the car. He relentlessly pursued all the missing parts and eventually we crafted a car out of them, having great fun in the process! As to the aero screens, I am pretty sure two did come down but unsure as to why only one was fitted.
As is the way, Harry and I drifted apart, so not sure what happened to the car after about 1980. I know he competed in several hill climbs, but cannot say with what success.
