Real heartwarming story ! Wishing you the best in restoring, and keep it original (with some tweaks, here and there)

great story Pat,
as going from Father to son (by a long detour) you can update the car me thinks, I guess with a car like a old TVR thats no problem, that TVR too, those days a lot came in 'kit' form.

so a V8? why not, although I also understand others saying to keep it like it 'was'
but when you restore it, then its already different with your touch also in it,
so I don't see a problem, it still has your dad's spirit in it, but then mixed with yours.

good luck with that lovely rebuilt/dream, will follow this post.

Fancy that, the address on the invoice is almost next door to my Aunt.
She is the house right next door to the golf club on Hall Lane ...

Properly sent a shiver down my spine reading that, fantastic!

I look forward to hearing more about it and glad your daughter is okay now. Does she have any interest in helping you with it? (If you have an interest in her helping you with it!).

I followed this on the "Left to die" thread - it's a really heartwarming story, and what a tribute to your dad.

I , and I'm sure many others, will be following the rebuild with interest - for however long it may take! hehe
Absolutely that - looking forward to hearing that V6 rumble (or V8) or ...

Keep the V6, but push it out to 3.1, stick some DGAS triple carbs on it, a stage 2 head and you should see 200bhp... smile

what a great story Pat. I am sure you will do both the car and your old man proud with it. I'll look back in on this thread with interest.

Yep, definitely painting it's bum black.

Plan is to keep it looking standard and original, at least from the outside.

Likely to fit roll cage and subtle improvements to suspension chassis, steering and brakes to make it safer and more useable.

Will almost definitely be keeping the Essex, hopefully using the original engine block if possible.

Less likely to retain Zodiac gearbox and o/d. Would make more sense to use T5 or Type 9 five speeder, I think.

Body lift this weekend, if all goes to plan.

Is it the 4sp single rail or external rod linkage 4 speed box?

The Capri 3ltr 4 speed box IE (single Rail internal linkages) fitted with overdrive is actually a very nice and very strong piece of kit with a nicer change than a T5 and much less likely for a 5th gear to shear off the shaft as per the type 9 box. Don't discount using it!!

You can,t fit overdrive to a Capri box, its a Zodiac (column change box) with external linkages.

Personally I would retain original box in these circumstances.

Happy New Year Pat
Late 3.0 Transits had overdrive?? Was that also the zodiac box? I had an external rod box in a 2.0 Mk2 capri. From memory it wasn't nice, but the car also had a knackered diff. Would have thought any box with removable tailshaft would allow a laycock overdrive to be fitted ? But then again I am not as old as you wink

Edit.
Just found this..Not unlike my T10, Its probably quite a strong box and certainly period. Pat if its any consolation, don't let the rods put you off, My T10 shifts sweetly
