New build, old school shell on later spec chassis - discuss?
Discussion
Thanks for comments...quick update, progress slower than i had hoped due to having to work for a living (what a bore!) brother and myself stripped off the chimaera donor shell last week and tried the rolling chassis under the tub. Much easier to fit having no front end, so can fit or remove whilst manifolds stay in place too.
Should just fit under bonnet...
Increased clearances to work in engine bay..
next job is try the bonnet on and site the radiator, will need to fabricate a small framework to hold rad and bonnet hinge, front crash protection etc.. all good fun.
slow progress but decided to not use the vixen bonnet and get back on with the recreation of the taimar bonnet. Adjusted ride height of the chassis to set it correct with the ground, then lowered the front of the tub to give it a bit of rake (attitude).
Thinking of going 215 or 225/45/17s on the compo's so built up the existing tyres just to see what it would look like in the current arches.
Needs to be road usable too so dont want to drop front too far down. Next thing is to look at front edge and grill, and decide if i want any bonnet vents...

Hi Andrew, I might take you up on it as I am now going back along the route of a more taimar looking front. Just difficult to get it back up to Cambs without spending £50 on carriage. Leave it with me and I will see if something can be sorted, it will certainly be helpful on the reconstruction. Thanks, Phil.
This is my plan for the front end. The bonnet top section will hinge and be remove able. The lights and front spoiler will be fixed. This over comes the bonnet angle limitations when the nose hits the ground. It also allows the fitment of various lower front end panels, I.e. road or track version.
Phil.
Had a bit of time to spend on my project, collected the damaged bonnet (many thanks Andrew)
T-cut out the damage ! Sliced and diced it, temporarily put in some repair sections to get a better feel to how it will look (no I wont be keeping the stripe effect)
Collected the new Griff Roll Hoop from Ian @ Sportmotive to fit before bonding the two tub sections together again (thats another story)
Found the bodyshell is not symetrical and didnt want to sit well, so i have dropped some datum lines down and this will help ensure the tub is sitting equally to all four wheels before being bonded to the floor.
Yes, I have found the front wings (behind the front wheels) are offset from centre, the left hand one is further in to the car and even seems to curve inward towards the front to. So I will centre bonnet and doors to the wheel base and build up the wings to suit, they need to be brought out by 70mm per side to match my widened bonnet any how.
All good fun.
All good fun.

Hi Arthur, the seats im using in my build are Lotus Elise seats and frames, as it is a fun road/trackday project these offer a combination of good lateral support, low down seating position (which gives better headroom for crash hat, but are also comfortable enough for a longish journey. I struggled to find a modern race type seat that would fit around the roll hoop.
A number of people use them in chimearas on the trackdays, they come up on ebay fairly regularly and as they are leather they seem to last quite well.
I bought the cream coloured one first as a single (passenger side) and kept waiting for a drivers side to turn up but it didnt, so in the end bought the dark blue pair.
Hows your M doing, been on the road what a year or more now?
Regards,
Phil.

Hi Richard, standard track, had them on my griff for track days. Bought them from John Reid here:

Never liked the folded metal ones much, especially corroded ones!
Your Griff still moving forward?
Regards, Phil.

Rolling chassis is all done, back to fibre glassing the tub now, hopefully it is coming together for this summer!
Impressed by your rear wheel arch design by the way, nice profile well done!
Cheers, Phil.
