Neil, Thats why he has two seats....... one for each ch.....

I think from my fading memory that EBW174S became TYG14W, TVR and registrations were very fluid at the time!!! I know that Spindley has copies of those EBW pictures, maybe someone could contact him and get one posted.

I vaguely remember this topic coming up before, a few years ago. None the less, on a quick Google search, all I found was...

We sold 'TYG 14W' when new back in 1980, this had simply been stood at Bristol Avenue and the factory had contemplated retro-fitting the boot aperture/lid. I don't think that it had ever been registered previously. I also think from memory that it may have had the 'TurboVec'alloy wheels fitted which mainly found there way onto the US cars. John Viggars, who was the RO for the Liverpool branch of the TVRCC had a dark green 'HCK' registered 3000S which had a big-valve head engine etc. I can't remember if that had a bbot lid or not?
The original prototype car that I had a few years ago was registered 'JHG 891S' and had been the first version of 'XKU 3L' I was told by Mike Penny, the TVR production director. This car differed significantly from any later 'production' 3000S. Not only did it have no boot lid, it had a different shaped rear 'deck' early type rear light units, different doors and sidescreens and a completely standard 3000M dash arrangement.
I hope that this helps a little!

Thanks Tony and everyone else who has helped so far.
Really glad i asked the question as a lot of answers have come out especially the fact that some cars had the boot added but obviously not all as Peters book said i wonder does the 258 3000s cars made take some of these into account but the important thing is we have what we have and they are great cars.

This is the car I mentioned earlier, and is the one Tony refered to as a 3000S protoype with a standard dashboard, TR6 rear lamps, and early (Cortina Mk2) door handles. Although it has had a boot lid cut in, there aren't the usual Hillman Imp hinges just a couple of fasteners at the back to lift it up by.

I haven't seen it for sale, so maybe the same lad owns it and hopefully it will resurface soon. Photo taken at Rockingham in August 2007.

Certainly looks like it (p91). I dont know whetherits the angle, but the facia (what you can see of it) looks slightly different and the petrol cap looks much further inset in the Robson book. Obviously an older photo though, and who knows what was done to the car between 1993 and 2007 !

The Facia is just not fitted if you look carefully the brackets that hold it up via the sun visor screws etc are there and in place either had it removed or never had it fitted or was at the trimmers when the picture was taken screen looks standard

From all the replies it looks like there was a lot of development work to get to the final 3000s was this the first model where there was this number of prototypes.
Or where there earlier ones when they did the earlier models yes i am sure there must have been prototypes but was it more a case of constant development from the early Granturas when you look at them all in a line it lookes like Motoring evoloution which all stops in 1980 with the Tasmin.

This car is different because not only are the lights different, it has the upswept curved section between the rear bumpers (a la 3000M) rather than the squared off section between the bumpers as on the green prototype, all other 3000Ss and the Taimars.

My dad has had a 1600M with the mk2 Cortina rear lights, a red 3000S (CFE 618S) and now owns the last M series car sold in this country - a n/a Taimar SE originally sold to the chairman of Duckhams.

Not sure what you mean, there.

Andrew,

Have you S-types not set up a registry? Have you considered emailing with the members, to see who has the dozen or so earliest cars? The ones from the listing, here, are below.

TVR 3000S USTVRDUDE, nwarner, 62GRANTIII, Gnasher, Big g, v8yale, Christian3000s, Devon Flyer, oldgeebee, chris willy Sold, pridaux, Tunepipe911, jim3000s

||TVR 3500S V8 || Graham Halfyard||

Not sure what you mean, there.
If you look between the bumpers on an M the rear bodywork sweeps down in a clean curve above the exhaust pipes.

On a Taimar, there is an angular section which I always took to be a way of reintroducing some rigidity into the shell after the boot had been let into it. A 3000S shares this piece of bodywork with the Taimar and this is clearly common to some of the prototypes (see pictures of the rear of the green car without a boot earlier in the thread. The red Rockingham car has rear bodywork like a 3000M and unlike a Taimar - or a production 3000Ss

Was the red car a genuine factory car or cut down from a 3000m (which would admittedly have been a lot of work)?
