the solenoid boot release does not work. Do i need to turn the ignition on for it to work or is it live permanent

It is live...Open the pocket between the drivers area and the boot, unscrew he cover and operate it by hand, open the boot. The trim on the door post will reveal the 2 lucar connectors and you can eliminate the switch, the solenoid is VERY robust but the chromed 'bullet' rusts.
