The step you are missing is the formation of water vapour within the brake fluid. Water vapour is very compressible hence the sponginess. When the fluid heats any water present turns to vapour and the condition worsens. Hence poor or no braking.
Precisely.

I did mention it at the start, just the AA book doesn't (oddly).

Granted re the leaking seal, but, where is the vapour going to come from in a clutch system, with no heat to transfer into the fluid...WE will find out...later as I have just picked up a Chim in from break down WITH a master cylinder gone....

Practical science...at least it will be water dripping into the foot well not fluid. IMHO I need to be able operate the clutch for as long as it is needed to get it off the trailer and in behind my gates...a fair test I feel!!

It would definitely be good to see what happens if it's filled with water.

As you say, not as much heat so possibly no conversion to vapour/steam.

It should work, obviously only useful as an emergency/proof of theory, as there's plenty of other reasons why you don't want to use water long term, biggrinbiggrin

...3 presses of the clutch, the car is inside after 3 refills, at least it is not brake fluid over my shoes.
