Anyone have a picture of where its located on the block and what it looks like?

Little brass thing with a single spade terminal on the top. looking from the front of the engine it is nearly central in the inlet manifold just behind the dizzy and next to the thermostat housing.

Should look a bit like this when you get it out......

that's interresting because the one fitted to my 3000S has a round threaded contact.
I think it should be spade as you show. Also the temp gauge is not working.
I had a problem like this on my 1600M and when i fitted a sender with a spade contact the temp gauge worked correctly.

Remember it is a Taper Thread so dont over tighten if it sits proud a bit and dont fit what ford recommend for the engine check with Adrian as i found it was different due to the smiths gauge and voltage stabilisor best to buy the two items together from Adrian then you know they will match when we did my 3000s we had to play around with different voltage stabilisors until we got one that gave the correct reading to the engine temperature

IIRC Ford temperature senders of this era had a choice of different colour plastic inserts to denote their resistance.

Yes but there is a particular colour for use with the smiths gauge and i cant remember and i am not at home to check i think Adrian will be on later to fill us all in correctly.

Location as per above

Mine (on a 3000S) has a lucar type connector on the sender. In itself the connector is less important than the resistance of the sender (and hence a correct reading)

Willing to let you know the part n° (and resistance...?)

I could be wrong, but I though the Lucas (= Smiths guages) ones had a spade connector, and the Ford ones had a bullet/threaded type connector with their colour code? Or is that for later engines (i.e. Cologne).

The sender I have mated to my AC gauge is a Vauxhall Viva sender and is fitted with a spade. The original sender came from a V Ventora I believe. I'm not sure that any of these senders had a tapered threads or have I got that wrong? Can't see why they would have. A couple of turns of ptfe tape and nip it up.

.....and nip it up until the taper tightens wink


PTFE tape is not for parallel threads, all imho of course.

forgot to add that if you do use a little turn of ptfe to make sure you don't cover the whole thread and isolate the unit from -ve.

The taper thread will cut through the tape wink


I'm not doubting that there may well be sender units with parallel thread but....


Taper thread = ptfe or thread seal compound (Loctite etc.) because it seals on the thread.

Parallel thread = Dowty seal or copper/fibre washer because it seals on the shoulder of the hex (like the majority of sump plugs for example).

Sorry if I come across as a "know it all"....... I'm certainly not but one of my biggest pet hates is things bodged with the wrong sealant, glues, pastes etc.




and don't start me on ptfe on compression fittings ranting .... smile

You were right and you got me thinking so I had to pop out into the garage to check mine! Thankfully non tapered with fibre washer so I won't get told off!

Well I was nearly sure the V6 Essex one is a tapered thread if Adrian or someone else can confirm I was nearly sure that when Adrian sent me a new one he said don't worry if it sits proud just don't over tighten as its a Tapered thread but I could have been Dreaming again I do that a lot usually about some job on the car hehe
