Hey everyone,

I recently acquired a '71 2500 (1872T) that was originally purchased in 71 in England and shipped here in 74. I noticed a decal I have yet to see on any TVR's over the past 20 years. I had a 69 S2 that didn't have it, my dad had the first 2500M built in 72 which didn't have it as well as our 65 Griffith 200 does not have it.

I've tried looking through pictures and have yet to see it anywhere...

It's located (on my car) inside the passenger door towards the front windscreen. It says "IMPORTANT NEGATIVE EARTH SEE HANDBOOK"

Here is a picture of it, i dont have a close up one yet.

Sticker

Either way i'm not sure many people know that this decal even existed.

Thoughts?

I've seen similar stickers on earlier cars of the period (Austin Healey Sprite). I believe, because prior to this period most cars were positive earth (i.e. the positive earth was connected to the body of the car).

It was an issue for things like radios and dynamos.

Congratulations on acquiring your 2500. That's the second one, or more likely the first of two that have recently changed hands - both very low mileage and low ownership.

Lovely colour, I haven't seen one in that shade before.

I don't know anything about the sticker, sorry. I haven't got one on mine, just checked.

Please keep us posted on your progress.

Yep, mine DID have one (2018T). But peeled it of to reveal its original colour so I could get a decent match. I did it 20 years ago when I did not think keeping the sticker would be a good idea.
71 2500.

Thanks for the input.

I have seen the stickers on the Sprites / MG / Triumph but have yet to find this exact sticker.

This particular TVR has the stock radio, maybe that's why it has a sticker? Not sure how many TVR's had radios or not. I have the original Sales sheet of the car, and the Color is considered "Aquatic Jade" which was made from i believe 68 - 70 on the Ford Cortina. I would actually like to figure out how many 2500's were painted in the aquatic jade. The 2500M had a similar color but it was darker called Sherwood Green i believe.

It has less than 28,000 original miles everything on the car is 100% original, even has the tires from 1971 and original spare tire. Obviously the whole car needs to be delved into...but man it is absolutely gorgeous in the state it's in after sitting for so long. The car has a great story behind it and it was awesome hearing it from the original owner.

Anyways, i'm in the process of re-making this sticker since I cannot find the exact one. So if people have interest in it i'll have some available. I work for a marketing company so my printers are helping me sort out an exact replica. I'll keep my original sealed up but use the new one when i re-do the car.

Steve,

I'm in the process of re-making these right now, so when i'm done i'll make sure i get you one. I'm just glad to see that you've seen it as well as i'm sure most owner's have never seen it since by the time they get their cars it's gone.

Very kind of you, just wish I took a pic of it. Think the sticker on mine was between the hinges.

I just looked at your 2018T and it's gorgeous! Well done! The one other thing i've noticed that no-one seems to be doing is where you have Vixen on the back, mine shows that it was a small 2500, i've only seen them with vixen as well.

  • shrug* tvr always did things different per car as well so i wouldn't put it past them to have some one way and others the other way smile
P.S. I'm not nit-picking your car, I just geek out about small stuff like this that most people overlook and I want to make sure I'm collecting the right information or providing the right info to others smile

Just out of interest (obvs. nothing to do with Trevs) but my Dad ran a Mk. 1 Escort from new in 1972 through to 1993.

That had a sticker on the inner wing under the bonnet which said 'Warning! Positive Earth!'

Weird to think that he was running a Positive-earth dynamo powered vehicle right through until 1993...bless him!

I've not got any stickers on the back of mine yet as I've never found what should be where. Another job to do.

If you look at the tail end of my car in the link i put up above, you can see where the stickers were on the tail end.

My car also had the same size 2500 on the lower front rocker panels..not the big 2500 that the M cars have.

He really did go through it. He loved that car, the nutcase. It was a 3-door Mk. 1, 1100L, with a 4-speed box. As basic as one can imagine.

He commuted to London from the South in it nearly every day, from the early 80's. When he finally sold it in 1993, it had over 400,000 miles on it. It was still on it's original diff, but had two propshafts, two gearboxes, and three re-con engines.

Every time he went to get a re-con engine fitted, we used to say 'why not get something better and more modern?' But he would just reply 'I like it, and it's cheap to run and reliable...'

Can't argue with that I guess....

As you suggest, IMHO it is related to the radio. I have seen them stuck to the radio casing, and feel that they have little if no association with the production process at TVR and are more akin to the oil change stickers that used to 'remind' you when you last changed your oil.

We seem to forget that TVR was a production line making cars and very little of the 'They did things different per car sometimes based on what was on the shelves' went on...when you see enough of them you can see what is OE and what is not.
