No, not professionally, just a bloke who can tell a "we need to get this running today improvisation" from a long term well engineered modification wink

But the T5 has a dreadful gearchange compared with the Ford 4 speeder, so does it really improve the driving experience??

davidy (with tin hat on!!!)
David ...there are T5's AND T5's, (don't mention any other T...versions) and with it you cannot go cheap and cheerful, there are versions of the syncro rings that stall the gear change (making it SOOOOO SLLLOOOW), getting a 'known' gearbox is worth a fortune, because paying out, to sort the gearbox is stupid money, the problem is that opening a gearbox up and looking inside is beyond most peoples expertise, and the guys who know what they are doing know this!!

WITH the RIGHT internals the T5 IS better...IMHO of course...again,

Regarding both the type 9 and the T5 conversions, the guys who re-configure the differential ratio (spending the money doing the whole job properly and getting bigger 'rewards') will tell you this.

Agree with Adrian,
Good T5 is wonderful, a bad one dreadful.

If I was doing a Vixen, box would stay, weak diff would go and final drive (mph/1000) would be sorted by diff ratio change as part of the swap smile

Well you obviously need glasses I have had various engineers and mechanics look at the conversion while I have had in on the ramp both at my local Garage for Mot which is my local Mercedes Garage where I buy my daily drivers and in my own garage and all have thought it was a very good conversion especially as it does not alter the original chassis so reversal is easy the proof of the conversion is in the Driving and those that have driven her are rather impressed in all directions
Maybe you can put some pictures up of your work and we can pull that apart sure you would enjoy that
Andrew
And there I was thinking that you just had a problem with me Andrew yet here you are again having a pop at anyone who has a differing opinion than your own.
I am sure every mechanic in the land is in awe of your wonderful mechanical skills. Oh sorry I forgot of course they are as you have already told us that

"Those that have driven her are rather impressed in all directions" Talk about blowing your own trumpet lol.

You certainly are the master at one thing and that is hijacking other members threads with your overpowering opinions. bow

You mean that "anyone who has a different opinion than yours", of which there are several.
Why do you always have to be so forceful and self opinionated with your comments. Let others have their say without always butting in.

Careful with the /////????????s as well.

Not really done much in the way of changes or mods to the Taimar but please feel free to search the "S Series Forum", you should find a few examples of my handy work, comments, suggestions, criticisms all welcome. After changing something it is often easy to look again (or a fresh pair of eyes to look) and think "yeah but next time I'd do this or change that"?

Subtle difference between slagging something off and constructive criticism.

PS guess I'm of the Christmas list? getmecoat

I know Christmas is near lads, but leave the panto to the men dressed as ladies let's not have it here. This was a cracking thread and gave me some good pointers in between the slingshot.

(From above)

Yeah, if someone was to say to me what's the first thing to change and the weakest link in the Vixen, I would probably say the diff. Those Spit/Herald/Vitesse diffs aren't up to "heavy" driving...

5 speed conversion - - If you find a box cheap, it's tempting, as it bolts straight onto a 1600, but then a 2000 OHC engine will pretty much bolt in too, so where does it stop ? And then onto the inevitable discussion on originality....

I reckon it's all down to individual choice really, and that's the way it should be.

I think I'll go for it and start getting the parts. Nothing is quick here though - too many projects. It looks like Sierra box, rs2000 bell housing, adapt brackets or fit plate, rig up a slave or do an internal one and mull over the speedo calibration.
Cheers

Yes, as I have a 174 BHP 1600 that has eaten the gearbox once and will need converting, the next time it needs doing.

Adrian,

174BHP - My understanding is that a type 9 isn't really up to that sort of power - but a type B is.
I guess the best solution is a T5 ??
Which way are you going ??

Would you not fit a well built updated CR 4 speed box (I assume with a 174 Bhp 1.6, it won't be a road car)?

Hi John,
It will not be me who breaks this one! I can't change the gears that quick.
It is the only TO DO job on the car, it is close ratio 2000E box (it is the 3rd different gearbox in the car ...although ALSO, the 3rd evolution of the engine/gearbox, the other 2 were refreshed and are in customer 1600M's) the rest of the car has the 'dialed' in service points at zero as of the next MOT.
I just need to get it finished! put the earplugs in and drive it!
