A little behind schedule due to a couple of slight chassis repairs needed. I know in the picture above the chassis looks as though its covered in surface rust but its mainly dirt and red overspray. Scrape away the black top coat and underneath its a nice white primer smile

I have also been trying to find if any of the other twenty MLs that were built are still about. I managed to get the chassis numbers for all the cars and most of the reg numbers.
Three were LHD
Five of the chassis numbers dont exist anymore or at least are not recognised on HPI
One had an under bonnet fire and has been off road since 2005
The first one which was the prototype has been off road since 1994
The motorshow car is Sorned
The fifteenth one built was last mot'd 2009
The last one built is still taxed and mot'd
The rest have been off road over 20 years and some over 30 years so hopefully may be locked away awaiting finding and restoration.
Chris

If anyone knws the wereabouts of the missing MLs please could you let me know. It would be nice to get to see some more out and about.

Things not going to plan unfortunately. Took the heads of the engine and noted one of the bores was heavily scored, so today I removed the piston and the oil scraper ring had somehow twisted and bent scratching the bore. So stripped the lot down. Main bearing shells look brand new, big end shells have picked up in a couple of places and when I removed cam retaining plate it fell into four pieces which it a bit worrying.
So to add to the aleady massive list of just about everything on the car I now need to recon the engine.
Getting a little frustrated with this one I dont think any part of it has gone without a hitch.
So any recommendations on engine upgrades while im there ?
Might as well try to get a little more power

While looking for something else I stumbled across these reprints in an old German TVRCC magazine.

Interestingly, it appears to be of a left hooker 3000ML but with UK plates slapped on, and KY is a Bradford registration not Blackpool. Email me direct Chris if you want me to send you some better scans.

Oliver.

Chassis now back from the powder coaters so the fun starts now, will make a nice change to be putting things back together instead of pulling them apart. Sorry about the picture quality but taken with my phone in poor light.

You could think of a new cam (Kent V63) and/or unleaded stage II heads

I went for alloy timing gear and rejetted the 38DGAS carb (along with a tune up of all) and got 168 bhp at the wheels

As it concerns an ML, its probably not to the taste of the 'original' police, but, as they say in Germany; F*ck 'em !

I dont think it makes much difference if the engine it upgraded as long as its not a different type and this was my intension but as funds are very quickly running low I needed a cheaper alternative so have managed to source a standard engine thats hopefully in good running order just to get me started, once I have the car finished I will start collecting parts to make a better performance engine. With this being an older M it has the TR6 diff does anyone know if these are ok with say 160-180 bhp?

The TR6 PI has 150bhp, so the diff should be able to take that......

The cost effective solution is using the TR diff, that is, keeping the engine near standard and the diff in known good condition (overhaul ?)

However if you want to go for more power in future, you want a Salisbury diff to be put in now rather then later (changing a diff with the body on, on a M, is the stuff nightmares are made of..........(they come out from the top...)

You do not want the ramp-angles and ratio of a Jaguar (which most of the Salisbury diffs on the market are) iow new crown and pinion, preferably 3.54 ratio and if the budget streches, an LSD

You might want to ask Adrian (he's got a 3.31 TVR c/p, mine to be precisely...)

I would prefer to keep the TR6 diff I know they are no as robust as the Salisbury one but it is what the car came with out of the factory. I will get the diff rebuilt though it's booked into a local specialist along with the Vixen one just to be on the safe side. If Adrian's 210bhp turbo one could cope then I should be ok
Cheers Chris

A bit further on got all the wishbones fitted and rear uprights

Also decided to buy myself a Zinc plating kit, its really annoying when all the time you spend making things look nice even if they cant be seen only to find them covered with surface rust the first time you get caught in the rain.
This is the last one I did.

Hopefully this will sort out the issue

It will also come in handy for a few other things so had a go at the bonnet catch I got the plate powder coated with the chassis but the catch mechanism was totally rusty

Before

After (the spring catch I didn't do its one I picked up from a friend)

Oooo they look good, that is an idea. I was thinking of giving mine a lick of paint but that presents a new option. Can you give more details of the kit?

I have brain fade and cant for the life of me remember what the fuel pipe size is for the metal front to rear pipe. With this being an early model I dont have a return so just the main feed pretty sure it was 8mm but just need it confirming before I order it.
Cheers Chris
