Grantura Mk2A clutch for hillclimbing and fast road use
Discussion
Hi,
I am wondering how I can get a light racing clutch set up for my Mk2A in order to keep her Street drivable.
As you know Granturas had MG Magnette gearboxes (different clutch lever arragement) thus it sounds like that converting the MGA springs type clutch cover to MGB diaphram clutch is not a straightforward operation.
I am wondering to use a modified MGA roller clutch bearing, an organic AP racing clutch disk and if I can source one a heavy duty springs type clutch cover.
From an original TVR factory leaflet I found that they gave the option of an heavy duty clutch in period but nowdays looks like none of the most known parts suppliers eitehr keep im stock heavy duty springs for the above or a MGA cover with firmer springs.
I am going to use a MGB lightweight steel flywheel and I will change locating pins position and number or drill the cover to accomodate MGB flywheel.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
Regards,
F

Be careful as the flywheels for MGAs and early MGBs are not all the same. I assume you are running a 3 synchro gearbox? If so,there is a 'high' starter motor and a 'low' one ie different backplates between MGB, MGA and Magnette
I would speak to someone who prepares MGAs for racing such as Bob West or Brown and Gammons. FWIW I use a Helix 4 paddle clutch with a sprung centre but that may be OTT for mild competition.

Hi,
Many thanks for your replay.
I have hi-starter 3 synchro with maybe 10 splines both on input and output.
I am basically aware on Mga and early Mgb setups but the key point is the difference beetwen Mga cover that's taller than Mgb diaphram.
Here in Italy I do not know anyone who can help me on this.
I have already bought parts from David Gerald but they looked to me not so prone to give advice on products.
What about Nigel Reuben?
Helix would work for me. Would you be so kind to let me know items codes and where to buy them?
Best regards,
F

I use what is basically an early MGB set up. The Helix four paddle clutch works fine for road use as there is no snatch and the springs reduce driveline shunt. It came from Mardi Grabs Motorsport at Silverstone.
If you are looking at using a more conventional rally type cover, take advice. B&G are in Baldock and the Bob West is in Pontefract. Neither DG nor Nigel are MG specialists which is what you need.
