3000M Twin Fans / Otter Switch

Need some help!!

1975 3000M with a SPAL twin fan set up installed around 15 years ago by previous owner. No apparent electrical override switch currently wired up.

I need to establish whether both or either fan is working.

Am I right in assumming the fans are controllled by the otter switch and this simply opens / closes when hot thus making the electrical circuit by connecting to earth? If I'm right then if I disconnect the incoming cable to the otter switch and earth it directly then the fans should come on or is it more complex than that?

Fans should come on if you disconnect the 2 wires to the otter switch and touch them together.

Or live to earth - but then you have to know which is the live...
