I am just having the radiator recored on my restoration project.

There is a fan for the engine, but the old radiator came bare.
There is no cowling for the radiator to use the engine fan on the water pump.

Should there be a separate electric fan on the radiator, or is it not needed?

TIA - Simon

Hi Simon,

There was never any cowling between the engine and the radiator (unless someone knows different!)

Most people add an electric fan to the rear of the radiator (sometimes the radiator is too close to the chassis member so the fan can be positioned on the front, but that can hinder airflow) If you want to keep the engine bay looking original then leave the engine driven fan in place, otherwise gain a couple of BHP and remove it.

Thanks Matt - sounds like a plan!

What do you do about a temp sensor to activate the fan?
There is no fitting for a sensor in the rad body.

You can either fit an inline one in the top radiator hose where original the ford '?' shaped one joined the straight pipe to the rad or convert the thermostat housing to one from a later xflow which had the temp sensor built in.

If you're having the rad re-cored, could they not fit a screw-in otter-switch fixing into the bottom-tank at the same time?

I had this one installed into my 3000m radiator when that was re-cored.

IMHO the sender should always be on the highest point.
Just because hot water is there first.

Agreed.
The radiator has already been recored and is waiting to be collected.

However, I've bought a NOS Fiesta OHV thermostat outlet, tapped for a fan switch (only £7.99).
Just need to sort a switch with the right thread, plus a fan.

Thanks for all the advice!

I decided to use a kenlowe sensor to 2 relays to 2X 8inch fans

An example http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=1...

Others available and twin fan kits too.

Hot day & traffic jam in Hereford town last week and discovered the electric wasn't working - eek

Just managed to get home OK, with a few stops on the way. Faulty dash switch was the cause.

Now considering getting hold of an OE fan blade - a few extra BHP or maybe a stuffed engine next time!

OE, as in the one on the water pump?
Does it do anything useful?

I'm just looking for a suitable electric fan to fit on my refurbed rad.
I didn't think to get a boss fitted for an otter switch, but have since found that MK1/1 Fiestas with OHV engines have thermostat housings with a boss built in. I got one from:

I can put in an expansion bottle as well now smile

Does anyone happen to know which otter switch fits?

Cheers - Simon
