Ever since I have had the car I have had problems with the boss not fitting right. The horn never seems to work correctly either. The horn used to be a switch on the dashboard. Now I am trying to get it to work from the centre steering button.
When the boss is fully tight there is hardly any room between the boss and the horn disk that is fitted into the steering colum. When I turn the steering wheel sometimes the horn sounds so it's not that great.
Any ideas to how it should all be fitted?

Firstly is the wiring wired permanent Live to the Horn
Second is the steering Column fully earthed between the bottom UJ
Third is the steering rack Earthed separately
The horn push connects to the connector that has a spring the spring may be a little slack and not keeping it away from the connection point.
Also is the boss on fully square if not may be creating a connection when you turn it.
The copper ring in the picture is the connection point I presume the Boss is pulled away in the picture.
Remember your completing the circuit via Earth connection not Live Connection.

The reason I ask about the wiring is I have seen where when a horn is wired to a switch they wire it as live not earth.

From what I have been Told the Horn is permanent Live and always a useful place to pick up a live feed when testing something in the engine bay.

You can also get issues is the bushes in the steering rack have to much play the MOT should have shown if that was the case if there is worth changing to Polly as the rubber ones don't last very well.
Your Boss does look a bit worse for wear it may be worth getting a new one however the column itself may well be damaged creating a bad fit.

Totally Phil still does not make sense though LOL side dip high seems much more logical

Adrian. I had exactly the same fault with mine when I got it some 6 years ago. I remember spending hours & hours trying to resolve the problem, thought I had and gave the keys to her indoors to drive. 200 yds later, horn sounding off and she stopped, got out and has never driven it again.... bonus!

In the end I asked Adrian Venn to look at it when he had the car to do something else. I can't remember exactly what he did but I think it involved putting the boss in his lathe to machine off a few thou. Whatever it was it worked. If you can't fix it yourself, he would be a worthwhile call to make and he's not far from you.

Is the steering column bush on the top chassis rail bronze or nylon? I changed mine to nylon years ago and have the same problem. Does the horn work with the steering lock engaged? If it does you have lost the earthing through the steering column, earth wires across the UJs and from the steering rack grease nipple to chassis help but a bronze bush on the chassis rail is best answer. You Could of course but then you don't learn you just get it fixed half the fun of old cars is learning how they work and learning how to fix them very satisfying

Thanks for the help. I've sent the boss off to get skimmed on a lathe and take things from there.

I am not quite sure how skimming a bit off is going to help (noting that l can't see the car!). Obviously you realise that you can set the height of the steering column inner independently of the outer.
