Looking for 3000M or Taimar

Dear all, I'm looking for a Taimar or 3000M if anyone is looking to sell. I've seen a Taimar for sale on classic car web site by auction in June. Does anyone know of gbv940s.?? The auction house has some history but by no means complete....thanks to all in advance. Best, Lee.

Hope you enjoy the search, they are great fun cars and pretty simple to look after yourself. I don't know GBV940S, but it featured in the June 2007 issue of Classic and Sports Car, where it was tested against a GT6 and an MGB GTV8. The MG won, though they were looking for a GT and concluded that the TVR was the best sports car. I suspect it might go for a high price at auction (probably snapped up by a dealer and £2k more a week later), so you may be better off looking around. In any case, I would certainly suggest looking at and driving a few before opening your wallet - says the man who bought his Taimar from a mate having never even sat in one...

Thanks for your information Oliver. I have owned a Taimar before, although it was in the mid 80s!! I wonder whatever happened to JPE103V, silver with burgundy model band. I bought the car from David Gerald's in Pershore early 1985 and sold it back to them in '88!!! They certainly seem to be thin on the ground at the mo.......

Prob looking to sell my mainly white/ with brown and blue stripe & brown sunroofed roof 3000M 1978 once I get a new MGB GT which am going back too. I haven't the technical ability to keep going with the M ! Just had 12 month mot, pm me if you require more info/photos( body engine & gearbox & new clutch all sound, chassis OK, interior so-so electrics the usual fun etc)

Could someone tell me which one of these has an Overdrive or was it an option for both 3000M and Taimar.
Maybe Overdrive was only on the Martins limited edition.
I was looking to buy a Wedge but have changed my mind.
I am looking for a series "M" with a "V6" engine and like the idea of an Overdrive

Overdrive was an option on all 3000M's and Taimars but all Martins had it fitted.

You can tell if the car has overdrive because the handbrake lever is on the outside of the transmission tunnel I believe

on my 3000S 1978 the handbrake is next to the gearlever. As far as i know my 3000S had an Overdrive when new

Overdrive was an option from around 1975 on the 3000M, and from launch on the Taimar until around late 1977/early 1978. I thought it was only offered on cars with the Triumph diff, and was not offered when the Jaguar Salisbury diff became standard. I wasn't aware that any 3000Ss had overdrive, though Classic and Sports Cars' guide on their website say most had it. As Henry says, on overdrive cars the handbrake sprouts from the side of the transmission tunnel, rather than from the top of the centre console (photo on page 304 of Peter Filby's book is a good example of this).

when i bought my 3000S someone had already fitted a T9 5speed box. However with all the paperwork that came with the car there is a lot of info about Overdrives. Plus in the tunnel there is what seems to be an electrical socket for i imagine to plug-in an Overdrive. I don't know all the history of the 3000S

Well finding a 3000M looks like it will take a while.
I thought i had found one very original but micro-blisters everywhere which is not just a quick rubdown,then paint. Roof to recover or minimum Weathershield and paint rest in plastic paint.
I understand there is metal around Weathershield which rusts and could need replacing.
Even with my free labour that means £3000 to do if you find a very good friend who can paint it for you.
So i'll carry on looking for about £6000 you never know.

You may be lucky (we were) but I think you'll struggle to find a good one for £6k these days.

Is the paintwork that bad it needs doing straight away?

We were lucky to find ours as a private sale that was only advertised on TVRCC site. That was 2010. We paid £6k. Very happy with it as a solid car. But have spent quite a lot on it since and haven't started on paint yet!

My personal choice but if a car was good and let down by paint I'd consider it a decent buy for that sort of price.

Still a fantastic car for the money! Ours will be paddling off to Le Mans later today

I agree for £6000 if it needs a repaint with blisters everywhere BUT not £8500 with blisters everywhere+ vinyl + weathershield needing replacement.
When there are blisters and pimples everywhere it's a very big job to get ready for painting IF you want to get it right. I have learned many things the hard way with 40 years of Lotus Elans and working on grp.

There do seem to be quite a lot of cars trying to get top money for average cars. Nothing wrong with average cars, wouldn't describe ours as much more but it works and gets used.

Fully appreciate the work to repaint is significant.

spends time and money on them.

Top money moves with the market and the TVR market has been moving upwards for some time now. Maybe time to look at what you can get for £10k when it comes to an m series car...it's not what it was 2 or 3 years ago.

I bought my last car 2 1/2 years ago for 4K, early car needing everything, but very original and complete, it was not usable. Seemed like strong money at the time, not sure it would be now.

Agree things have moved on.

Challenge is that the range between complete restoration project and very good is only a few grand.

Saw complete restoration projects at £4k when we bought ours. Prices seemed to haves moved up a bit but I with so few for sale and many of those from dealers it's hard to value them accurately.

Would certainly expect £8-10k as the range for a good M privately these days.

£10K should buy a very presentable car that could be further improved without massive restoration costs.

Not sure 3k will buy it. Bit like the days of 2k vixens - long gone IMO
