long time since I've done one but think it can stay in? Probably easier with it out the way though.

If it's not smoking and has even compression do you need to?

thanks Andrew,
at least that's good news.
I connected the small hose from the swirlpot to my glass jar with leak test liquid inside. That way any bubbles from swirlpot could make it change colour if gasses are present.(e.g.blown head gasket)
There was no change in colour of liquid.
I revved the engine and the liquid was sucked into the swirlpot so i looked at the exhaust. There was lots of steam out the back.
I wonder if the leak is the dreaded Valley Gasketeek.
I will check the colour of all the spark plugs to see if they are all the same.

There will be condensation from the exhaust if the engine is cold? Check spark plugs and compression before you get the sockets out!

there isn't a valley gasket (as on a Rover V8 for example) it is the inlet manifold, Very unlikely to start leaking on the air inlet side, far more likely coolant into oil or external oil leak from either end.

I worked on a lot of V4 Transits in my day, same engine near enough but shorter!

o.k. i'm still learning Essex V6 vocab. But the inlet manifold on the Essex V6 is wedged between the 2 banks of cylinders. The gasket i have for the inlet manifold is in one piece and will be bent in 2 places. It looks like there is a correct way up to fit.
Are there any fitting tips please.
Do you assemble the heads loose with inlet manifold then torque all up together in stages with sealant.
I'm all ears and ready to learn some hot tips

Just an update so we can all learn together.
I removed the Inlet Manifold without removing the Dissy no problem.
The Gasket that goes across between the 2 banks of Cylinders looked like it had seen better days but there were no obvious leaks.
I gave everything a good clean and fitted a new Gasket.
Head Gaskets are not leaking so i didn't change them.
I have filled cooling system with Antifreeze.
I have fitted x2 cooling fans infront of the Rad to replace the original Kenlowe fan.
I will finish the wiring during the week and each Fan will have it's own Relay with Fuse.
I will see what happens when i run Engine upto temperature to bleed/burp cooling system.

Update, i have just taken the 3000M for a 40 mile drive and now at last it is running 100%.
It seems the problem was the Inlet Manifold gasket
