Has anyone put a pinto (either 1600 or 2000) into a 1600M? If so how easy is it with regard to changing prop, diff etc.
or indeed is it worth changing at all. The thing is that my 1600 crossflow is getting a little tired and I will (possibly in the winter) be looking to renew or replace the engine.

Hello alan.
A pinto is fairly straightforward but! why would you want to replace an antiquated heavy old oil burner for another one?

if you are going to go to all the trouble of changing an engine then put a modern Zetec or Vauxhall XE 16v under the bonnet. Both are readily available for little money, can be tuned readily, can be made to fly if you want to spend even more and most importantly are just as easily transplanted as a smoker of an old pinto?

people have even told me that the zetec drops onto the chassis mounts of the crossflow powered cars without too much trouble.

Go for a zetec Alan or at the very worst re-build the crossy. which was always a much better engine than an old cammer anyday.

Neil.

Neil,

Thanks for the info, I had toyed with the idea of a more modern lump like a zetec but wouldnt that involve new wiring loom and engine management bits and bobs? Electrics I am not good at! (lack of patience). Maybe the crossflow rebuild might be the option!?

Thanks,

Alan

Hmmm.......

I wonder if the twin turbo from a noble would fit?

sybaseian's car is great, really enjoyed (briefly) reading the article and drooling (for ages) over the pics! I'm not a 'keep it original' stickler and would always consider more modern engines if my old essex went kaput.
But as Alan S said the electronic gubbins would be a problem?

Is it possible to get a bespoke or basic ecu (Emerald? or is that just chips)that would just control the engine and would not have the alarm/immobiliser/windows/tyre pressure monitors/ABS/EBD/Airbag bits? Then you would be flying!

To be honest, there's not much in the way of electronics with the car - engine management and that's it!

As has been said on here, the engine is very easy to tune from about 160bhp to over 300bhp using either carbs (upto about 220bhp) or going for a turbo conversion.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I think I'll wait until the Crich meet and have a good look at all the options.

See you all there I hope

No point - I was averaging 50mpg down to Le Mans and back, although I was in a convoy with a '53 stepsided Chevy that would only do 60mph.
