I have a modified crossflow whith sidedraft webbers which iam to fit in my vixen. I intend to fit a 5 speed sierra gearbox. I have already located a bellhousing but now need to know the following:

Which clutch plate do i use?
Is there a difference between the gearboxes with regard to ratios?
Hydraulic clutch, how?
Speedo drive?

Any other advice appreciated

Latest update:

I have bought a sierra 5 speed type 9 gearbox with 3 months guarantee for £50. Bought a hydraulic clutch kit and suitable clutch plate from burtons for £230.

Just need to save up for sexy short shift gearlever and sort out mounts and propshaft.

If you have a standard crossflow flywheel, it'll be drilled for a 7.5 inch clutch, which doesnt work very well for a 23 spline gearbox like the T9. You will need to talk to Burtons about a hybrid stylee clutch: Normally the 8.5 inch clutch comes with a 1 inch by 23 spline drive plate, and the 7.5 inch clutch comes with a 7/8 * 20 spline plate.

If you have a Lotus Cortina flywheel, youre having a laff, cos they are drilled for the 8.5 inch clutch (bog standard Seirra 5 speed and cheap), and its easy.

Bigger clutch take more grunt.

Im building a Vix with a Lotus flywheel and a T3 box, so I need a 8.5 clutch with a 7/8 by 20 spline drive plate, and Ive got the burtons concentric nose cylinder.

You MAY need to fit spacers or even turn the adaptor plate down to get the correct clearance between the release bearing and the clutch spring fingers. 3 or 4 mil clearance on a new clutch is apparently about right.

HTH.

Been running a Lotus flywheel and clutch on my 1600M for years, have found some clutch pressure plates foul the original inertia type starter dog, stays engaged, outside edge of plate needs machining if it overhangs the outside diameter of the flyheel. Think Lotus starters had smaller dog fitted but nice light flywheel conversion, needs double dowels onto the crank too.
