Having seen the red S1 Vixen on ebay recently go for £5700, it made me wonder what opinions people have on the current values of the Vixen or for that matter other classic TVR's? Using the traditional classic car mag scale of Concourse, condition 1, condition 2, basket case etc etc, is there a general concencus on say a Vixen S2? My estimates would be:
Concourse: £10,000
Condition 1: £7500
Condition 2: £5000
Basket case: £2500
Obviously there is a huge amount of assumption in here because there isn't really a "standard" spec to judge and every car will be different but I'm sure you get the idea of where I'm coming from. I also know that any car is worth "what someone is prepared to pay for it" but I just thought it would interesting to see if there is a broadly similar viewpoint on the subject.

They are actually stickers put on there for Le Mans, but as the car didnt make it due to eating its own gearbox, I decided to leave them on and have another crack again next year! with a newly installed refurbished Borg warner T5 box!
And i did use the other tuscan in the gulf colours as a template. I tok the pic with me to the sticker place and asked them for a reversal of that one! Thanks Cantus!

Can't help thinking that i've not made myself clear here. As I said in my original post, I know that any car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. The Reliant van from Only Fools and Horses is probably worth £££'s but it doesn't mean they all are! What I was trying to judge was whether there was a general level of agreement on a value for the example I gave. So assuming you were in the market for one, what would you pay for the Vixen S2 example I used?

I am personally getting sick of "what is my car worth threads" Particularly when I am accused of talking certain cars values up or down?? (see taimar thread)

How much have you spent on it?
Bottom line is that you know what you paid, how much you have spent and what you think its worth. Thats the price you stick on pistonheads. Someone will either then buy it or knock you down to a price you can still live with. Your cars rarity is always on your side since their will always be more buyers than cars.
If you're not selling then its all pretty irrelevant stuff
You could offer me 12k for any one of my cars and I wouldn't sell. You could offer £30k for my griffen and I wouldn't sell

OK so you're with me - the figures in the car mags don't relate to "real life" prices but where I'm trying to get to is what are the real life prices for classic TVR's? The Vixen S2 I refer to is a hypothetical car of "standard" (whatever that is) spec, not my car. If there was a big enough pool of cars being bought/sold in the market it would be relatively easy to establish a value for them but there isn't hence why I am asking for opinions on the subject.
Or let me put the question another way, what would one insure a "condition 1" Vixen S2 for? Or if you stuck ten of them on ebay each with a start price of 99p and no reserve, what would they go for? Ignore the specifics of any particular car, just assume standard car, first class original or restored condition, etc etc... you get the idea.

Thats the Point Tom. you cannot generalise. 400 odd S2's were built 30 odd years ago and their are probably less than 50 of them still in existance and even fewer of that number in anything near roadworthy condition. they are a labour of love to restore and to do it you join a very small circle of like minded nutters. Value for insurance will take a value of market sales and / or re-instatement value which is why us nutters always take less and buy the car back as salvage to start the whole process again.
of the xx number of cars which come up for sale the general rule of thumb can probably stand , this is only because the really good ones don't come up for sale. The really good ones are usually sold between the band of nutters and never advertised. when The other "Winger" on this forum reads this he will know exactly what I am referring too.
Again to build a vixen S2 to top level spec will cost between 12-15k if you can rub down the wag and slap the paint on yourself. Its still cheaper than a Mondeo?? go figure.
