My middle silencer box has a niggling rattle and needs replacement or fixing. Does anyone know if this is a standard donor part from another vehicle or will I need to get one made up? The engine is a 1600 crossflow with large bore manifold.

The unit is a twin box assemble fitted to the 1600M with a single tail pipe setup or the 2500M with a twin tail pipe setup these days S/S items are the norm, that said if your is S/S then a rebuild/repack could be the way to go, as even the S/S system use mild steel perferated tube inside.

Thanks Adrian,

The system is all stainless apart from the manifold, has centre box and a back box with twin tail pipes.

Is this beyond the skills of a local 'fastish fit' outlet or would I need a specialist to cut & repack etc?

There are fast fit people who do and can re-pack our local firm even have a Huth pipe bender , and do this type of work, but I would think not, as the S/S welding is beyond most. The current systems being made do not have any filling within the boxes, there are what I would call diverter systems where the baffles within the box are set for and aft of the centre line and tuned to resonate and reflect the sound internally, these do not require any filler as such, but need to be solid in form to work, these do not need an exhaust man to repair, perhaps these are more a job for a welder with a TIG set and C9 welding rod (silicone bronze) rather than S/S rod (this is how I repair/re-pack systems) Adrian@

Adrian,

I removed the silencer box today and surprise surprise, the baffles are intact but the box had been touching the chassis rail when at high revs albeit by one very small point of contact. All clamped up again now and no more rattles!

Thanks again for your help
