5 speed Box in a 3000m
Discussion
Hi
I have managed to source a couple of essex engines and a bellhousing from a granada to suit a 5 speed box(Type 9 I assume) and the essex bolt pattern. Can someone tell me the rest of the procedure, I can get most any ford part and so if I have to gear should be able to complete this.
TIA

i always thought you needed a special bellhousing for this task
Ford did do a bell housing from the V6 2500 engine during the 70's that matched to the type 9, this is rare, and the box was the 2.8 version (which has a weak front bearing). If the gearbox bellhousing has been sourced....you need
the gearbox to suit the bellhousing/and spigot bearing, which has the correct input shaft, different centre cross member to suit new mounting position, speedo cable to suit circlip fitting, quick shift conversion, as the throw of the lever is so big it looks daft in the consol, speedo re-calibration

The last price on an exchange bell housing and full kit was 181.00 (not inc gearbox and speedo re-cal).

Out of interest the 3.0 capri spigot bearing also fits a 5ltr ford v8.
All dalliances from my past experiments.
Neil.
There are several different Type 9 boxes to choose from ....I've had 3 with different/shorter than was required dumped on my floor in the past...BUT the 2.8 is not up to the job and the 2.9 with the electronic speedo extension housing cannot be converted, Where you find the correct one is beyond me (I buy mine in converted to the job of fitting on to the converted 4 speed bellhousing, as you mention it can be done, I do it). IT IS by far the best thing that can be done to a standard M series......

hi adrian when we are talking about 4 speed gear boxes is it the one with those weird looking levers on the left side and the overdrive unit bolted on the back, cheers mark
Hi Mark No I write of the Ford 3 rail heavy duty box (type 5 sometime listed as E ) as fitted to the Granad/Capri 3000....the side rail box as you are describing was first fitted to the M in the 'Martin' versions (although the earlier Tuscan had a different version of the side rail box) the M series OD cars suffer from leaking seals and poor switching of the inter-locking unit (a switch that stops you from engaging OD in 1st, 2nd and reverse). The chassis is different, in that the OD unit would clash with the chassis had TVR not removed a upright tube and the mounting point for the gearlever/inter-lock switch spans the top of the chassis (the gearbox cross member is different too) it is matched to the 3.45 Triumph differential.

Have thought of putting a type 9 (or a T5) into my Tuscan but I quite like the O/D on the old side-rail 'box. I found this site useful when I was researching the idea.....

However, if Adrian sells kits it would seem the obvious way to go.

My understanding is that they were first fitted to various Fords, namely Zephyrs and Zodiacs for column change, hence the external linkage. I am not of course old enough to know if this is true or in fact what a Zephyr or Zodiac were sTeVeR. Adrian will be along in a few moments to correct me if I've been mislead

My first accident !!!!! in my dads then new column change Zephyr (well, before he even bought it), I as a child, whilst the car was still running, moved a lever thingy-me-bob and the car jumped forward and hit a fence post, well, he had to buy it then! That's where the V6 'thing' must come from (although, now I cannot remember if that was V4) a V anyway. As you say the selectors were on the drivers side of the box suited to the column change.Adrian@
The next accident was upside down in a MK1 Cortina!
Showing his age.....
Hmmmmm,
On a parallel universe the Gilbern team are wrestling with early Ford 4 speed overdrive gearboxes that come out of old Zephyrs ..

On a road car I'd go for a T5 rather than wrestle with loads of levers bushes and widgets.
Fortunately if you enter the TVR Speed Championship you can use whatever gearbox you like ... enables us B'stards to go out to play :-)

I put a T5 in my TUscan when the 4 speeder gace up the ghost. It was done by Dulford an I think they had to fabricate the bellhousing.
great gearbox as well, transforms the car, far better in my opinion to the sierra option.

Granted the 5 speed transforms the car...IMHO for a standard BHP car the Type 9 (with a quick shift) is perfectly OK...the only reason I did not put a BGH type 9 in my turbo was that Brian was only be happy with building a box for an engine under 280BHP,(at that time and would not allow a quick shift to be fitted to his gearbox) I mention this, as NONE of the Sierra run the larger front bearing required to do this conversion, you find it in the 2.9 cars (BUT then the extension housing has the eletronic speedo and needs a second box to do the mod) OR you get the 2.8 version upgraded.great gearbox as well, transforms the car, far better in my opinion to the sierra option.

The T5 conversion kit I do for the M, IS PAINFUL there are 3 different positions of the gearlever alone (people assume a T55 and T60 is a T5) The bell housing conversion is off the shelf (I do a exchange unit), but the cross member I thought would fit all versions has to be made bespoke and you then need a new propshaft, a good build box is silly money plus the bits mentioned.
Where as a good ready to fit all done box 320-380, 181.00 (exchange bell housing and all the bits kit) and approx 80 (speedo mod to suit gearing) on the 2.8/2.9 version.
