maybe this picture can help...
I'm the owner of this 2500M from 1972. It seems to be the fith to have been built as the register number is 2244TM.
I can tell you that the first color was "mediteranean blue" afaik.
I don't know if the plate had changed between your ownership and this number shown on the picture.
I can search in all the papers i have, but i don't know the story before 1980.

Thank you for your post. I bought my 2500M new in 1972 just prior to VAT. I used to live in Timperley sour of Manchester. I think I owned it for several years driving around the local area on business before the motorways were built. I sold it when I moved to Clanfield near Portsmouth when I only needed to commute to Cosham.
Here is a photograph from the old days. I am the bearded one at the back. In Sprint July 2014, in the articles on old Sprints, I appear on the cover of Sprint No: 19 July 76.
