£350 Ebay punt - Passat estate shed

Second time lucky on the Passat shed - my last one was a B5 1.8t estate with all sorts of problems. Sort of accidentally won this one this evening though completely unseen, as I did miss the old barge. But then for the price, I can't come off too badly. Looks to be in very good nick with only a couple of things needing sorting, hopefully. I'll be off to pick it up Weds evening I think. here's a photo from the auction for now.
Oh, it's the 125bhp 1.8 petrol, nothing too exciting but will hopefully have a bit more poke than some of the TDI models.
Thinking of picking up some OEM alloys for it and some roof bars for my bikes and just running it as is.
If anyone is interested, I'll keep the thread up to date with news/photos upon collection.

Good buy, I also had a Passat shed but it was £500 and a tdi. If you have had another then you probably already know but make sure the passenger side carpet is dry, the pollen filter lets water in and there is an ecu under the seat that will cause all manner of electrical problems if it gets flooded. Don't smash the sump, it takes bloody ages to get it off!

It won't, sorry That engine was utterly gutless to the point where VW effectively discontinued it and reinstated the old 8v 2.0 engine with 115BHP as the replacement in a lot of models. At least the 90BHP TDI actually had a bit of torque below 4,000 RPM

That's basically the plan until I can afford either a fast estate, or a second 'fun' car.I'm sure it's equally gutless as the van it's replacing, but a slightly more inspiring drive! (only slightly)
I don't think the 1.8 20v will be that bad; they used to offer an 1600 unit with just 100hp. A quick google has it down at 10.5 secs to 60 and top end of 128mph (couldn't find the more useful 30-70 figures) but those stats sound fine for a run around even today.
I do like them though, my dad had a new one in 98 but a saloon with the 1.9 110 tdi. I currently have an Exeo on the B7 chassis which I am sure is just a revision of the B5 and it feels as though as nails. I'm guessing the B5 also has the longitudinally mounted engine; nice characterful feature imo rather than useful with the engine hanging over the front wheels, but at least it will have equal length drive shafts minimizing torque steer (maybe not noticeable with the 1.8 though!).

Cheers, my old 1.8t passat wagon was a lovely car, only a year newer than this one and looked to be much tattier than this one (though we'll see what tomorrow holds). Like you say, it felt like a really solid car, handled well enough and was super quiet and comfy, which is my main reason for buying it. I've got a dodgy back and the van just isn't comfy. It might not be fast (though as you say, the stats suggest that it's not really super slow either, only by comparison to other cars on here!), but it's a comfy, quality feeling place to be! Only thing I didn't really like about the drive on my old one was that the power steering is a little too obtrusive for my liking, but hey ho.
Picked it up wednesday evening. Aside from a couple of bits of trim loose and the issues the seller mentioned (ABS sensor and window regulator), it seems to be pretty good. Slow, as people pointed out, but very comfy, and the bodywork and interior is just as good as the photos suggested. MOT until December, and no funny noises etc. Winner!
I haven't had time to take any proper photos yet as I've barely seen the car in daylight myself!
Anyway, the guy I sold my old passat to is breaking it, so I'm going to have some parts off that, including the alloys, which should make it look a little nicer if nothing else Getting those and a few other bits and pieces that it needs for £100, so not a bad deal really! Probably won't do much else to it aside from keeping it running.

A few months later, and the beast still plods on. It's had a few bills and bits, but so far still hasn't broken the £1000 shed barrier, including purchase price (not including fuel, obviously). It needed new tyres recently - front two were borderline illegal and rear two were perished. Managed to get a set of four alloys (admittedly not great nick) with tyres, two of which were brand new and the other two with a bit of life in them, for the grand sum of £50 plus a drive to chester services. Happy with that!

both front window regulators - £30

Set of alloys with tyres - £50
total: £900
I'm of two minds whether to get hold of a couple of centre caps for the alloys or not. It'll look much better, but it is still a shed...
