I find the range of long life milk available quite baffling. What's the difference in it all, especially the value/smart price one? Milk is milk, is it not?

UHT milk is truely rank. Surprised anyone buys it. We used to keep a carton in the back of the cupboard for emergency use, it went off before it got used laugh

I knew that! I wasn't asking the difference between long life and fresh milk, but the difference between the choices of long life milk brands. I was more curious about value/smart price milk.

I only ever have milk on my cereal and in my coffee and I don't notice any difference

If you like soya milk, Tesco's own brand is quite nice, doesn't need to be refrigerated until opened, and nearly half the price of Alpro.

I'd stick with soya milk if it didn't curdle in my coffee!

As with most things, there is little to no difference in the actual contents of the box, just the shiny branding on the outside, which needs to have a marketing budget. Tesco Value UHT milk will be identical to Fortnum & Mason's Range Rover Evoque Limited Edition Saw You Coming Rolex UHT Milk, but half the price.

My family lives on Tesco Everyday Value UHT Milk and we haven't died of Social Embarrassment yet. We don't even decant it into cut glass when we have guests, and none of them have died either.

:-)

Buy one of them new-fangled kettles that boil at 70-100 degrees. Anything above 80 will most likely curdle soya. You can also get a milk frother / heater that heats milk up to around 70 as well.

Interesting, we don't use cow's milk at home, only Alpro, but as you allude, it's rather pricey!

We buy the lacto free stuff as the other half is lactose intolerant. It tastes exactly the same as normal milk, comes in full, semi and skimmed guise and lasts a lot longer than the normal stuff. It's a bit more expensive but it never gets wasted.

I live in France where fresh skimmed milk does not exist, so we use UHT most of the time and it tastes OK.

Step up to semi-skimmed UHT and it tastes horrid, but we can buy fresh semi-skimmed.

Perhaps this accounts for the varying views on here?
