Hi all, a work colleague is struggling with his Boxster S. After 2 visits to auto electricians the side windows still have a mind of their own and are lowering at random.

So he can come out in the morning and they're down completely, while driving along they drop, but he can raise them as normal (no noise so not like when my window regulator failed) but then they'll drop again.

Weird how they sometimes stay in place for a few minutes or a few days and always go up when asked!

Any ideas before he takes it into the Porsche centre for a big bill? I think it's a 2003/4 model

If it was just when he came out to the car in the morning, I'd say 99% likely this was due to him having keys in pocket indoors and inadvertently putting constant pressure on the unlock button that will cause the doors to drop. Happened to me a few times and you can get the keys desensitised to prevent this.

But that doesn't really explain why it happens on the move!

Check the door bottoms for signs of dampness. If a window membrane leaks water gets in the door and gets the electrics wet. Havoc of the electrical kind ensues.

Give the doors a shake. If water is heard sloshing inside that's not good.

Just had both membranes in my 2002 Boxster attended too for damp doors. One just had to be reglued the other one had a tear and was replaced.

Check the cabin floor to ensure there is no signs of moisture/dampness. Body water drains can accumulate plant trash -- leaves and such -- and this can plug up the drain and result in water backing up in the drain basin and overflowing into the cabin. The security module is located on the cabin floor under -- in USA cars -- under the right hand passenger seat. If this gets wet all kinds of electrical gremlins appear.

There are a couple or 3 drains under the panels on either side of the battery (which is located under the front trunk lid). At the back there is a body water drain on either side under the clamshell arm.

The one time I had a window (passenger) window raising on its own proved to be a door lock controller bad. Sometimes the window would not drop when I pulled on the door handle. Other times it would drop but after the door was open would go up again on its own.

The window never dropped from an up position underway. But the doors would lock on their own and sometimes even relock after I unlocked them using the dash unlock button.

Definately check under the passenger seat for wet/dampness. If the rear drain tubes under the rear roof panel get blocked with leaves and crud then rainwater will spill into the car via the seat belt area, and get into the security module which can cause the issue you describe. If can also prevent the vehicle from starting, make the roof operate on it's own and a whole host of nasties..

Another symptom could possibly be the sensor's up by the rear view mirror. Remove the small plastic covers and check that they're connected properly. This could interfere with the car knowing whether the roof is up or down and hence, dropping the windows accordingly.
