Any news on the TVR Front? How much and of what does Smolenski own after buying it out of administration? Will ever again there be a high powered lightweight Blackpool special for us to lust after?

What I'd Like to see would be a get back to basics TVR. A reboot of the Vixen if you like, with fibreglass ((Or Carbon Fibre, though it would be expensive.)) bodies, tube frame chassis, and an engine that's provided by a major manufacturer. This shouldn't be read as an insult to TVR's motors, but I think considering the financial straits any new company would be in, the serviceability of a VAG VR6 or any other major motor would be beneficial. If it's an engine that is lightweight and can make decent numbers, even better. Also, using a major manufacturer's engines would help getting them through emissions, which would be a boon.

say they are one of the USA dealers and that they should have received a used Sagaris by now. They were invited to the UK update, but had a Lotus conflict.

They also said that they thought that any TVR's making over here were 6-12 months away.

To their credit, they took my name as an interested party and told me they would get back to me when they had something concrete to offer.

I would say less than 50% chance they call to talk TVR.

Steps to take to get a TVR into the States:

1. Read all documentation relating to USC 402780. That's the DOT's Rules and Regulations for importing vehicles as well as ratings for insurance. In fact, search the broader version of that USC and you will find every shred of information regarding the USDOT.

2. Contact your Insurance carrier and see if they will insure the desired vehicle.

3. Once that's verified and good to go, purchase your TVR.

4. Do NOT use TVR to ship your car for you. Do NOT use any dealership. If you ship as an individual and have all the proper customs declarations and required information, there is no need to customize your TVR (see USC Title 49 Chapeter 301 Section 30112 Para. B Line 2). Contact the destination port authority to verify what documentation you will need. Bill of Sale, Bill of Landing, Manufacturer verification of THEIR federal regulations IF applicable. (Since TVR currently makes less than 1,000 vehicles per year, they are not required to follow many European/British Regulations; in addition, TVR falls under this:

Certification; Importation of Vehicles
and Equipment Subject to Federal
Safety, Bumper and Theft Prevention
Standards; Registered Importers of
Vehicles Not Originally Manufactured
To Conform With the Federal Motor
Vehicle Safety Standards; Schedule of
Fees Authorized by 49 U.S.C. 30141

Google: Federal Register / Vol. 69, No. 163 / Tuesday, August 24, 2004 / Rules and Regulations

or go here: http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspublic/ContentViewe...

5. In the event that extra documentation is required, you can contact your local DOT office or the USDOT via online access and request a waiver for your vehicle. If you are US military, there are certain organizations that can assit you with the proper docs.

6. Basically, since you're an individual, you don't have to follow the airbag & emissions requirements (unless in Cali -emissions-) so long as you can afford the insurance, gas guzzler tax, etc.

7. What's it going to run you to ship? From London to San Antonio, it'll cost an estimated total of $2,200-$2,600 USD. Figure the distance from there or visit a UK-based shipping company's website.

8. How am I confident that this is all possible? I've got my 2000 Cebera 4.5 registered in Texas and loving the drives between San Antonio and El Paso. The Speed "Limit" is 80.

You was lucky to slip that one under the radar. As a non conforming vehicle you would have needed to have it bonded to and ICI and have an RI do a compliance assesment and add the required safety requirements. You was just lucky, i would not advise anyone else follow this route as it could lead to bad things. Best option with a newer TVR is to remove engine and have company replace appropriate items required under fmvss to meet kit car ( not many items) and then ship to the usa and instal and LS or equivilent engine.

as long as its over 15 years old you can import to CA.

So early Chims, Griff, S series will be no problem, basically anything older than march 1994
