Forgive me if this has been asked before?

Just wondering what car (choice of two) you would rate as your favourite GT car ever!

My love for Grand/exotic cars started only in 1995 after taking more interest in GT racing after formula one lost its greatest driver the season before (need I say who) .

My late uncle treated me to the BPR round at Brands Hatch and was truley overwhelmed by these SUPER cars . But apart from the high pitched noise of the McLaren F1 , the rumbling of the Marcos it was one make of car that gripped me, Porsche.

I love the sound of the flat 6 rasp with turbo winding down.

But it was the 1997 version of the Porsche 911 GT1 EVO that sticks out for me and the 1998 Porsche GT2 ( Konrad Racing & Roock Racing ) that I adore the most.

I really miss these cars and recall seeing the last season the 911 GT2 was used by Proton in the FIA series. I don't think any of the GT2s are running anywhere in the UK? But is give anything (within reason) to see one of these running again and up close.

My first choice
Porsche GT2 (1998 - 2000 spec)

My second choice
Porsche 911 GT1 EVO (1997)

As much as I loved the GT1 cars, it was the GT2 cars that followed that I prefer things like the 911 Gt2, ant the more obscure like The TVR speed 12and Ascari etc of late 90's British GT s

McLaren F1 GTR. My first international GT race was BPR at Donington in 1995. Those were the days, huh?

100% agree.

I like the new format of the GT3 cars of today but makes you wonder a few years down the line what cars are likely to make the series? Are you going to have to have cars like in the Dutch Supercar CHallenge take the grid?

The 997 GT3 RSR's look great but restricted with power when against cars such as the Aston Martins and the Vette's (new model out next year). But when you look a few series internationally they still pull off the results. BGT, WES , Blancpain etc.

The Ferrari 458's seem a little behind now days. The SLS GT3, BMW Z4 GT3 & The MP4-12c's have

And cars in the AMLS , The Lotus run by Alex Job Racing has no factory support which is a great shame as the car looks fantastic.

I really hope the revival series gets going. Be great to see those cars running on track once again.

Im a lover of the big bang GT1 Cars.

the macca and the lister being my favourites..

the panoz bat mobile was just a monster ( saw that at lm and daytona) and the gt1 vipers awesome.

the original porker Gt1 edged it for me over the later evo, and the merc was a bit late.

if i had to pick one I'd probably go for the Lister Storm..

if we are talking prototypes then it has to be the 333sp...cloud9

I'd prefer to see Le Mans going back to the GT1 style cars rather than the diesel protos

The Lister Storm was a awesome car. A little before it's time sadly. The later spec being GT2 then upgraded in 2000 at the GT1 spec.

The Panoz was awesome flame throwing monster.

Agree on the 333SP. MOMO colours.

The new breed of cars are fun.......but with no noise! I remember the 1997 - 1999 LM 24hr with great GT1 v Prototype battles taking place........then along came Audi.

I remember sitting in one of the grandstands in Silverstone at a Privilege GT race feeling the grandstand shake as the LM600s raced past. I swear all the female spectators went cross-eyed.

Great Videos. Thanks for sharing. I had to play the last video three times. lol

I recall being at Spa for the British GT Championship in 2000 (I think?) and being in the Start /Finish line stands. Boy that noise and vibration the cars caused. Will never forget that.

I think from memory there were
x2 Lister Storms
x1 TVR Speed 12
x3 Marcos LM 600
x2 Vipers
x3 Marcos Mantis
x1 Ultima GTR
Countless 996 GTRS (with non restricted silencers)

I have the footage along with the Belcar support race on Video somewhere? Need to convert it to DVD really.

Call me boring but its the Porsche 911 in it's various guises over the years. In my opinion no other car quite epitomises GT racing than the 911.

I loved the 333SP in Pilot Racing colours. Michele Ferte raced it at the Donington ISRS pilot event at Donington in 1997. Was an absolute honour to see it compete. I have a recollection that one lucky sod won a passenger ride in it at lunchtime at the event.

The late GT1 Storm looked fantastic, though a bit less brutal than the original bodywork.

This reminds me of happy days...

I remember sitting near Hill Top at Oulton Park with the Blue Coral 911 GT1 spitting flames on every upchange as it flew up towards the bridge on Clay Hill. Absolutely magic days and even at the time you just knew you were seeing something special which probably only happens once a generation.

Would have been 2001? 2002 we had the Saleen out as well. I would have been driving either the Marcos or a Viper depending on the year smile seems a long time ago now!

Excellent. What car would you rate as being the best? Hottest for driving conditions? Quickest?

I thought about it and I am sure it's 2000 I was at Spa? It was the same year as Cor Euser and Callum Lockie winning the title?

I'll have to go in my loft and dig out the video player and video itself over the weekend to re-fresh my memory.

The Viper was undoubtly the quicker. The frustration was always the Mantis had quite a lot of potential but the factory (and the teams) never had the budget to exploit it, its probably one of the reasons its endured so well in things like BritCar. I always maintained it needed more castor as it suffered terrible understeer, partly the diff was perhaps too stiff but it was mainly chassis related. The teams just put more rake into the car (hence always having high rear ride heights) but it could have been cured really and it should have been loads quicker. In fact I was offered back my old car not long ago, the old Ohana Mantis which was the only proper GTO factory chassis, it later ended up with Glen Eagling and Tom Shrimpton drove it in 03 I think. Its wrapped up in a barn somewhere gathering dust!

Both were actually pretty crude in engineering terms, the Mantis particularly. The Viper was always quite exciting to drive, and despite the size of the engine and weight up front it could be driven on the throttle if it was set up well.

Probably the easiest GT I've ever driven was either the Z4 GT or the Aston N24 both are remarkable 24hr cars as they are comfortable and require so little hustling which is nice - 24 hrs in something like a Viper would be a different challenge altogther.

I must say I think I hark back to GT1 as the prime period for GT racing, the cars really were special. The F1 or Porsche GT1 at full chat are awesome to watch, sadly I've never had a chance to pedal either!

For me personally it might not be current, I was fortunate enough to drive an ex Sebring 365 Daytona which put my hairs on end. It wasn't super quick but it was a hell of an experience. Perhaps it was just the cost factor had it gone wrong that made it exciting!

Of contemporary cars, the DBRS9 is pretty special, although dated now it blew me away when I first drove it. The same actually for the original 996 GT3 RS that was a hell of an evolution from the GT3 R, the wide front track made it a much more balanced car. But its only based on what I've driven really and I'm sure there are better cars out there for sure!

Sadly these days I'm better off commenting on road cars and commutes to London but then life moves on!

Fantastic feedback. Thank you for sharing.

The Marcos sat around gathering dust, was the paint Orange Marcos back in 2003?

I loved the howling noise the Viper GTS-R used to make, you could just hear it wanted more and more straights to keep its legs going.

For me I think the most out there year for GT Racing was back in 1997 with the amount of entries in the FIA Series along. Nationally the BGT 1999 series was great. Was a bit of shock going into the 2000 season knowing the F1 and GT1's would no longer take centre stage.

Engineering has moved on a lot since the late 90's. I'm suprised the Z4 GT (sounds like a Nascar to me)is easy to drive (so to speak). The N24 is more or less out the box ready for use if I am not mistaken? Shape wise the N24 is a lovely machine to look at.

The orange one was the other GT3 Marcos, run by Eclipse Motorsport (my old team). The Eclipse one was the first produced, as I recall.

The Ohana one was yellow, I think.

Hi Gimp we have 2 Porsche 993 GT2R one with a sequential box ( retrofitted ) and race then occasionally in the UK ( Porsche Open , GT90s , and Britcar ( run with RSR engine ).
Had many issues including a crash at 1 am at the Britcar 24 hr but finished ( 3 rd in class )and had fun .
As for the Donington race I remember that weekend as was in a supporting race.
It is a great shame the revival series did not get going .

Remember watching the GT championship on TV as well as going to races at Donnington and Rockingham.
Nothing could compare to the noise of the Listers, Vipers, CLKs and that purple TVR speed 12, that thing as a kid was just insane, although I do seem to recall it had a tendency to break down a lot.

Easy favorite has to be the Lister Storm in the yellow and green MoTec colours, or maybe a Viper, or CLK GTR, I could just keep going.
Looks like I'm spending my night on YouTube...

Just thought, anyone remember the failed Lotus Elise GT1, set on fire a couple of times if my memory's working properly.

Do you mean the purple coloured model raced in the 1997 or 1998 FIA GT Series? I think it was called a Bitter? Was a shocking car and set a light a lot.

Some of the Lotus GT1 cars were pretty tidy just lack of funding compared to a CLK GTR , Porsche , F1 GTR. Etc.
