I just love the Toyota TS-020. Beautiful, beautiful thing.
it is, but like the 935 'Moby Dick', more prototype than GT (the 917 was strictly speaking a GT too!!! ).For me, hardly surprisingly, it's the Marcos LM600, but the orignal era Viper is a big favourite too (The Oreca ones).
To be fair the mid 90s were a great time for GT racing, only edged out by the 80s Group Cs in my memory.
GT3s got lots of competitive cars, but the FIA series is rubbish with 1 hour races.
Blancpain's better, I hope to get to a race this year, it's been a couple of years since I went to one and I used to go to 2 or 3 big sportscar races every year without fail.

This reminds me of happy days...
I remember sitting near Hill Top at Oulton Park with the Blue Coral 911 GT1 spitting flames on every upchange as it flew up towards the bridge on Clay Hill. Absolutely magic days and even at the time you just knew you were seeing something special which probably only happens once a generation.
Ah yes, the halycon days of the old-style Gold Cup - Tim Harvey cleaning up in a Dodge Viper, and a chance to see a gaggle of F1s take on the only racing Ferrari F50 in Europe I remember sitting near Hill Top at Oulton Park with the Blue Coral 911 GT1 spitting flames on every upchange as it flew up towards the bridge on Clay Hill. Absolutely magic days and even at the time you just knew you were seeing something special which probably only happens once a generation.
I also seem to remember that one year, a Mclaren somehow manged to lose it through deer leep, and did a very impressive 360 spin and donut right in front of the commentary box!
As for favourite GT car - its a bit of a toss-up. On the one hand, the legendary Viper and Storm combination. On the other hand, a left field choice that defined a large part of my childhood and many others too:
The first time I was able to see these beasts first hand was in 2001 or so, a field full of Lister Storms, Viper GTS, Ferrari Maranello GTOs, and alike.
However, my favourites were those Matech Ford GT's, I'll never forget seeing them in Monza: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93jp1e5skYk
Been to a GT3 race 2 years ago, but was utterly disappointed by the lack of aural drama.

Since I was a boy it was the AC/Shelby Cobra, specifically the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe.
Carroll Shelby enlisted Peter Brock to design an aerodynamic body for the Shelby Cobra, with Bob Negstad tweaking the chassis; the result was a class victory in the 1964 Le Mans 24hrs and the world championship in 1965.
The DBR9 is a close second.

They tested the Coupe in the 60s to see how it would fare for Le Mans flat out on the M1 just before it opened, at over 180mph. Rumour is that this rather surprised the government who decided a speed limit, which hadn't necessarily been contemplated should be imposed temporarily. They chose 70mph. It is still there...

It was actually AC’s version of the Coupe (the AC Cobra Le Mans) that Jack Sears tested on the M1, arguably contributing to the imposition of the 70mph limit. That car out-qualified the Shelby Daytona Cobras at Le Mans, but retired from the race.
Ah, thanks, I had forgotten that. It is a very pretty car, they both are.Gassing Station | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
