British GT Round 1 at Oulton Park today - pics and thoughts.
Discussion
Hi there,
Had a great day today at a very blustery and snowy Oulton Park.
This years British GT promises to be a fantastic series with loads of great cars inc Lamborghini Gallardos, Ferrari F430's and various other cars.
Got to the circuit around 11.30am and watched the qualifying for the new Ginetta G50 series. The G50's look and sound great.
Then it was lunchtime at the circuit so I had a wander round the pits before heading out to watch the qualifying for the British GT series. Some superb cars parked up in the paddock including a Veyron, Gallardo Superleggera and Gallardo Spider.
Stayed out near the track to watch the VW Racing Cup practice. I must say watching diesel VW Caddy Vans take on VW Beetle's and Golf GTi's is some how quite surreal.
Then found a decent spot to watch the first race of the 2008 British GT series. The cars headed out and the racing was very close and full of action. After a few laps the race was halted due to a massive off by one of the GT4 class Ginetta G50's. I must admit I feared the worst for the driver, the car left the track mounted the armco and which point a post ruptured the fuel tank. The car burst into flames and was completely destroyed. I could see the car from where I was and it was a huge accident.
At this point I headed home, thinking about the terrible end to the day.
Was relieved when I got home and checked Daily Sportscar to find out that the driver of the Ginetta had escaped uninjured. So happy to here this.
Will post some pics once I have had a chance to work through them.
Regards
Tim

The pictures of the Ginetta crash are on Dailysportscar
There was no bodywork left by the time it came to rest in a fireball.

Hi there,
The Team Mondena Lamborghini Gallardo was crashed heavily in the first round of the 2008 British GT season today at Oulton Park. The car was being driven by Piers Johnson when it left the track on the run down to Cascades. The driver was uninjured and although the bodywork of the car was really badly damaged the chassis seems to be ok.
Heres a couple of pictures (copyright Jakob Ebrey)
Shame as the car was running really well and had dominated the mornings practice session.

That G50 required 18 extinguishers to get under control, and the smoke/steam/powder could be seen on the other side of the circuit.
For such big crashes (this and the Lambo), it's amazing that these drivers walk away - usually telling the Doc to bugger off as they're fine (some are, some aren't, so they all have to be checked over properly).

Glad to here the driver of the G50 is OK, the crash looked really bad. Says a lot for the construction of the cars that he got out uninjured. The G50s bring back memories of the Tuscans back in the 90s, should be a good race on Monday. Took about 450 shots but will not get a chance to process them until I get back home on Tuesday.
I wil never complain about the cold at Knockhill again after today, I have never been as cold at a race meeting as I was today.

I was there right in front of both of these accidents..
have a couple of photos of the ginetta doing summersaults - I was panning to get a shot and just carried on pressing the button - really thought that he would be at least seriously injured - it's the worst single car accident I've seen in 20 year of spectating - The driver was given a round of applause by spectators when he walked clear and waved....
I remember rikard Rydell's horrendous BTCC accident in the volvo 850 about 100 yards further up the track..
as was said the lambhorgini accident was about 2 laps before again after old hall and on the run in to cascades.
There was a very close fought 30 minute restart - very worth staying for,,,
I think I've nearly defrosted now - it was very cold...
I can post links later for some of the (other) photo's when I've sorted thorough them
But a very good day.
Simes.

Hi there,
For those who are not registered at Daily Sportscar, here is a picture from Gareth Fair/GT Gateway.
Perhaps you can see why I feared the worst.

Ginetta ran ever so slightly wide at old hall, lost a bit of pace exiting and got a slight tap on the drivers side rear quarter from the following car, before going sideways.
Massive incident from a tiny misjudgement
I knew it was a biggie straight away..the Marshals were scrambling on the other side of the circuit and then the Rescue Crew flew past.Massive incident from a tiny misjudgement
