...so what is with the idea of the little loops tucked inside the small end of these CV joint boots ?

Complete stab in the dark here, used to balance the weight of the bolt holding the clip tight..!

Ah must admit hadn't thought of that....although out of shot there were jubilee clips around the large ends of the boots, which would have needed even more counterbalancing weight and there were none.

Surely grease might leak from the pictured one ???

I had those on mine too. When I changed the shafts I binned the metal clips and used tie wraps instead
