Jenson and Lewis pottering about in what I think is a pretty amazing garage of F1 machines

Very probably a re-post so a gold star and a goodie bag for the person who points this out.

Some proper car-nerd going on there...

"The rear tyres....sidepods?..."

Kinda demonstrates how long they spent looking at the poster.

It's McLaren's own collection. Shame they keep it in storage warehouses and not in a museum for the public to enjoy.

see how massive the wheels are.

Such a shame modern cars are so ugly long and narrow.

Thanks for that, What an great video. You can really see the passion those two have for the sport and Lewis obviously idolises Senna.

Its such a tragedy this video as I think it perfectly shows the state of Formula One.

It clearly shows how Jenson (and particularly Lewis) are proper full on petrolheads, taking pics of each other etc. Just as we all would give the chance. You dont get to see any of that side of F1 these days, presumably not because it isnt there, but as its hidden behind a wall of PR politics dribble.

If McLaren really cared about their fans and the people who make motorsport what it is, then this warehouse full of some of the most beautiful, important cars in F1 history would be emptied into a full public exhibition, to celebrate and display the cars that have made the McLaren name what it is today.

A shame.

I thought you were going to take a different tangent and comment on how the cars are far too controlled now and other than playing with buttons on the steering wheel don't require nearly the level of driver input as they used to. That's not to say that present F1 cars are easy to drive or that I could perform like Jenson Button if they'd just give me the seat, but the older cars were run much closer to the ragged edge than we're seeing now.

The problem with McLaren displaying their cars falls to Phillip Morris who own the branding on their cars and West who also own the branding on their cars. McLaren may well have designed the chassis but the engines etc belong to the respective backers and the legal issues of displaying these in Woking is a nightmare.

Ten years ago there was a serious campaign to create a McLaren museum open to the public in limited numbers but the legal issues made it impossible. The cars can be run at historic events but will not be shown to the public via a museum so I believe. Blame this on tobacco legislation and the EU.

Great video, very subtle Vodafone advert, watch it again and you'll see what I mean. Still excellent though.

The part of this that makes no sense is that there are a rather large number of these cars on display in the Donnington museum:

A few have their tobacco sponsor name redacted but most clearly do not.

As i understand it most of the McLarens could be run with the minimum of fuss IF Ron wanted to run them. The fact is that he doesnt like them being used too often hence they get squirelled away into the McLaren collection.

Most of them have working engine's attached as i believe that Ron insists that he retains engines for the cars.

I might be proved wrong on that one so if anyone knows any different then i will stand corrected.

They can be run with Marlboro or West branding if desired as the rules on tobacco branding do not, as far as i know, mean that older cars have to have the tobacco branding removed.

The Lotus's over the weekend all wore JPS & Camel branding as did the Ligier which wore Gitanes branding & the Benetton which, i think, also wore Camel logo's. Also at the Lotus bash at Snetterton the previous weekend the Lotus 101's wore their Camel branding as well as did the JPS branded cars.

Why should some stupid law passed by idiots in Brussels deprive us of seeing Marlboro liveried McLarens, Camel branded Benettons, JPS branded Lotus's, Marlboro branded Ferrari's etc etc.

They raced in those colours & we should not be banned from seeing them as they were meant to be.

Next they will ban all cars from beng painted red, black or yellow because they resemble Marlboro, JPS & Camel liveries.

It is pathetic.

The MP4's & their contemporaries were proper race cars & i firmly believe that all F1 cars should look like the MP4/4 & that all F1 cars should have three pedals & manual gear-change..

McLaren & Ferrari choose to remove the cigarette branding which, in my opinion, is wrong.

I rest my case - i had forgotten that the McLarens at Donington had full Marlboro livery.

If I were Button or JB I'd be tempted to work for free for a few months in exchange for a Senna car. Imagine having that in your lounge!
