RE: Mini misses 2012 WRC deadline

Little do many original classic mini owners realise that the 1.3mpi engine was made by....bmw. Having been to some mini shows in an old 51 plate mini cooper, it was funny seeing classic minis with 100% free on bmw parts stickers on the back, when in fact, they were bmw minis with their engine in. Pretty amusing!!! (bmw took over before the new model, not sure when, on the very late models with that 1.3 engine)
^ LOL Sorry very wrong I read it elsewhere from someone else about the engine, apologies!!
SURE many people took great pleasure in replying that this wrong wrong, so at least it gave them pants pleasure.

BMW took over in 1994......Rover had already planned to end classic Mini production for good in 1996 when it failed to meet new European safety and emission laws. BMW could not believe Rover management were planning the end of their most famous brand worldwide and that Rover could not see the future value of investing in the classic Mini and its future replacement. BMW then insisted (with John Cooper's help) that several million pounds was invested in the 1997 Mpi A-Series engine upgrades to reduce emissions, along with front rad, side impact door bars and an airbag/seat belt pretensioner SRS system was added all of which kept classic Mini production going for another 4 years. All classic Mini's after this date have 'BMW Group' in their handbook!Mini MPI Launch 1997:

NDT beat me too it. You make it sound as if BMW altered and pretty much rebuilt the entire car. Their main input was mainly to add all the safety features as previously mentioned and tweak things for the emissions. Was still the same A-series lump that was used in the originals. What sounds pretty amusing is you showing up to a 'mini' show in the monstrously sized bini...teammonkey said:

<Yawn>What sounds pretty amusing is you signed up to PH just to slag off the MINI
Anyway...back on topic
I'm sure they'll be on the start line next year, as said, the WRC needs all the cars it can get

Nope far from it, been browsing the site for years but never got round to signing up. I actually really like the rally attempt, not keen on the rest mind. The want to correct that guy did however eventually motivate me enough to sign up... That and wanting to vote on shed of the year. I would say nearly everyone who's owned an original mini is fairly protective of themWhat sounds pretty amusing is you signed up to PH just to slag off the MINI

I know this is an old chestnut but its not a 'mini' anyhow, so BMW shooting itself in the foot in this way is nothing if not amusing to those of us who love and respect the original. Marketing gravy train come off the rails has it? Shame!
So true. There's only one Mini. And this BMW isn't it. NDT said:

Update:
Prodrive have just been on the phone. They assure us that Mini and Prodrive will be at Monte Carlo - and the rest of the 2012 season.
They are currently wrangling with the FIA to sort their entry.
They did, however, express some concern over the promotion of the sport - essentially they need to know that there will be TV coverage. Understandable when you're investing millions of pounds on what is in essence a marketing programme

That's a really bad photoshop, trying to make the Countryman NOT look twice the size of the original.urquattro said:
Perhaps we should reclaim the mini brand and get it nationalised as part of GB revived.
No bankers at risk so no action I feel.
What so you can bankrupt it like you did with every other British car maker that has existed!? Lol.No bankers at risk so no action I feel.
Let's pull the union flags out of our arses for a second a just accept if was the dump British outfit involved that messed up, and you're all trying to fob the blame off onto BMW, for obvious reasons.
If at the end of the championships mini have done surprisingly well, I'll have to witness endless threads on how it was 'british engineering' being the reason, and how the following year the mini is completing in f1 lol. bla bla bla...
