Richard-G said: I love this car. Two things. 1, does ground effect make up a large proportion of this cars downforce? 2, And is the aero package tested using a wind tunnel/cfd? Or is it theory based i.e. The bigger the wing/venturi tunnel the better? Yes the rear diffusor make up a lot of the downforce but also the wing is creating a lot of downforce! No it is not tested in a wind tunnel, because we are a private team and we don't have the facilities or the assets to do that. But of course it is simulated with CFD. Well there is a certain limit for the diffusor, because if it is to steep, than the airflow tears of. This tunnel we have is on the limit for our concept. It can only be that big at the rear, because the tunnel is very long actually. And the size of the wing is always in relation to the effiency of the whole system. By creating more downforce with wings, the drag coefficient is getting bigger and so you need more power. So that all depends on the power of the engine and on the amount of downforce which is appropriate for the type of races you compete. I hope this explanations answer your questions a bit and just ask if there are more questions, I would appreciate that

After our last race last Sunday, we can look back happily once again. Erich Edlinger in his BMW 320 IRL evo achieved incredible times and was fastest in every race run, as a result of that he took the overall win, the win in the “super race”, a single run with the 10 fastest cars of the race and he also set a new Trackrecord at St Peter / Kammersberg which is part of the Styrian Hill Climb Championship. some impressions you might find watching the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJW34n6jzsQ&fea...

Whats the single largest challenge when creating a car like this....
Is it the aero....the engine.....or simply getting the whole package to work at its best?

I must admit, this is the first time I have heard about this car, and what a car it is, love it.

Would there be any advantage in routing the exhaust outlets into the diffuser or would this be disadvantagous? I know that F1 cars used to route their exhausts into the diffuser channel but when they lifted off for a corner the level of downforce dropped significantly.

I know that F1 cars used to route their exhausts into the diffuser channel but when they lifted off for a corner the level of downforce dropped significantly. no that is very complexe to understand who to use the exhaust gases right. We are a private team with limited assets, so that is not possible for us. In F1 they needed millions for research till they understood how they can use exhaust to generate downforce. But the idea is great, we also thought about it.. @dtrump As I said, we are a private team and I think the real challenge was to fit that different parts together from different racing series to work together perfectly in that car for Hill Climb. There are very many hours of work in that because the whole programmed electronics is made by ourself. As you can imagine, there are a lot of small issues at the beginning and it takes quite some time to make the whole package work properly!

I’d like to inform you about our latest racing event: In St Urban, Austria, Erich Edlinger set an amazing pace once again, and dominated over all touring cars. He was over 8 seconds in front of the second placed touring car, a Porsche 911 GT2 RSR. With this times he was even in the position to fight with the 300kg lighter Formula 3000 cars for the overall victory. At the end an outstanding 3rd place in the overall classification was a great success for the team edlinger. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYrBSHafYMI

Keep your eyes peeled for an interview with Team Edlinger about the technology in the 320 IRL soon. I'm hoping to get out to Austria to see it in action next year. Good luck, guys.

Fantastic car!! I must say, the Hillclimbs in Europe are awesome, a real proper challenge. If, and when the Act of Parliament ever gets changed, to allow closed-road Motorsport, there are plenty of roads that could be used here.

Here is a very interesting video for all technical interested guys among you. It is a the data from the race in St. Anton with a acceleration and a following braking zone from 220 to 60 kph: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG8Trmj2YZoLook at the brake temperatures, the G – Forces and of course do not forget to turn up the volume to max ;-)
