They keep saying there's pockets coming but looking on the radar the pockets they are referring to would only allow a few dozen laps after drying the track and then the rain would be back on again.
Worst thing is there's even heavier rain coming along on Monday if it gets postponed until tomorrow...

I'm getting somewhat annoyed by the Office Depot advert. This is some epic filling by the presenters though, nearly 4 hours...
could be worse, most of the adverts seem to be for viagra or cialis. Those ads are laughable/cringeworthy, i.e. 'consult a doctor immediately for an erection lasting more than 4 hours' is a phrase I've never heard anywhere else except NASCAR commercials.Well we drove to Daytona from Orlando this morning early at 5:00, had a great morning at the track, we signed the start line, listened to Lenny Kravitz, walked around the garages, saw the drivers and cars.......sat in our seats and waited, and waited, and waited. OK it rained really hard and we got drenched but what other motor sport has to stop for the rain......even F1 runs, seen the BTCC, V8 super cars, Le Mans in the rain but not these wimps....it even takes 2 hours to dry the track. What a waste of money, I feel really sorry for the fans especially those who travelled miles and miles to get there....if they cut the boring chatter and endless introductions they may have at least got a few laps in....
It's not safe - at all - to run these cars on a high speed banked oval in wet conditions, hence NASCAR do not run in the rain.
We looked at doing it here in the UK at Rockingham, and found that we needed to restrict the engines of our ASCARs down to around 200hp to get the speed down, and then have some super soft wet tyres. That meant running almost rubbing the wall where there was some "grip" if you can call it that, like the Pickup Trucks do in the wet, and be prepared for more (bigger) accidents.
Considering that Rockingham only has 12degrees of banking in it's steepest turn, Daytona with 31 degrees could not work like that.
I have read that NASCAR are looking at rain tyres for the road courses, as they have done it quite successfully in the lower Nationwide series (the first try was a bit of a joke - they didn't have wipers or demisters!)
But in short, rain on an banked oval - park the cars!

Been there and done that, although not at Daytona. Feel for you but everyone who buys a ticket knows the score, its nothing new and I hope you have booked a rain delay monday into your schedule.hammo19 said:

Even if they could run in the wet, the cloud of spray kicked up by 40 odd cars would never clear. A 500 mile oval race in a constant fog wouldn't be much of a spectacle.hammo19 said:

Wimps? I'd like to see you drive one of these cars around Daytona with 48 other cars in the dry, let alone the wet.hammo19 said:

You want superspeedway races in the wet? Are you mad? You'd either sit there watching cars slithering around at greatly reduced pace for four hours, if indeed you could even see through the spray, or reduce the field to its component parts after a few laps and have endless yellow flags. Daytona has more than enough mayhem in the dry without adding to it. Rain delays are part of the game in oval racing in the exact same way they are in drag racing. I've been to more than a few rained off drag racing events down the years (one even got snowed off!), but I'm not about to write to the FIA and demand they make the European top fuel cars fit treaded tyres...I can understand perhaps wanting less flab surrounding the race build up, but that's American sports for you. Even if they'd started early, they'd still have been hit by the rain, so you'd had a race stoppage either way.
