The easiest way to see how good a driver is IMHO is to see what his lap times are compared to his team mate i..e the chap with the same car.....

He seems to be doing well, but I agree he struggles to keep motivated. I wouldn't be surprised if halfway through the season he decides that the tyres are stupid and either walks away or cruises around at the back of the field until whatever-the-black-and-gold-team-have-changed-their-name-to-by-the-time-I've-hit-submit pay him to leave.

But yes, he's the coolest guy on the grid, and I'd be quite happy to see him prove me wrong and have a sensational comeback.

I've spoken to people who have worked with him, I have seen him personally refusing to sign autographs while other drivers were happy to do so, I've been told the tales from the karting days, I've seen him swear on live tv which was his way of telling the interviewer (Brundle) to fk off, there are clips on youtube of him being rude and ignorant (possibly enough to do a compilation), and so on. There really is quite a lot of evidence.

Some people have told me that he really is from a poor background (outside bog at home in Finland apparently) and he really is from the rough side of the tracks. I think he's only regarded as cool 'cos he's foreign. If he was a rude British driver with no manners and (possibly) a dreadful accent, I think he'd be seen in a totally different light.

I could forgive most of that if he applied himself consistently on track, but I don't think he does that either. As I said, he seems to be in the sport to take precisely what he wants, and nothing else.

Still, I had no idea that swearing, drinking and being tattooed made you cool. I never knew that all of the people (men, women and quite a lot of the children) in the inner city sthole where I work were actually cool.

Kimi is a bit of a legend back in Finland. You are also correct though, he doesnt race for the fans, he does it for himself. F1 is a ballache. Finnish drivers dont enjoy it like they do rallying and they would rather be rallying, its where the passion lies. They do F1 because its where the best are. Find a few Finnish motorsport fans and talk to them about it. Keke and Mika were exactly the same. Some of the stories some of the old Williams boys could tell you about Keke make Kimi seem an angel!

Now he does. It was fun watching him try to keep it together.

I agree simply inexperience of current tyres was his down fall yesterday.
I thought that. He didn't have last years experience, and was probably not expecting the drop off to be quite as big as it is.

If he does similar in another race then pointing and sniggering may be in order. But this was only his 3rd race on the new style rubber.
So was Grosjean.... You're only as good as your team mate.

Grosjean v Raikkonen

Qualifying: 1:2
Race: 1:2

The "cool genius" isnt dominating his team mate, who (when he finally managed to get some luck and finish) worked out he needed to manage his tyres and got a good result. Time will tell, of course

Personally I've no doubt we'll see Kimi back to his best at the worst by mid way through the season. He is a hugely fast natural talent, always has been and always will be. Personally I don't see an issue with him not wanting to speak to the press, let's not forget drivers like Schumacher and Villeneuve used to have clauses in their contracts that they had to do as little press work as possible.

He's a driver not a PR tool, let's not forget he'd only done what? Just over 30 races in total before he got into an F1 car and instantly impressed Peter Sauber and a number of people at Ferrari. As for his drinking habits and what he does away from the track he's still a rank amateur compared to drivers like James Hunt.

You seem to be taking some pieces of information and extrapolating whilst ignoring other crucial bits.

It's been established on here several times that Finnish culture doesn't include the concept of small talk. Remove small talk from a conversation and you end up with someone who appears rude, ignorant but is infact none of those things.

You can't apply English cultural requirements to people of other nations or cultures because often they simply won't fit. Requiring someone from a differnent culture to confirm to your idea of cultural norms is jingoistic and arrogant and actually pretty typical of UK F1 fans. The same fans who think the sport will now fail because viewing figures might go down a little bit after the Sky move.

hehe brilliant - you actually know how he applies himself? As for taking what he wants - I suppose all the other drivers are in it for the airmiles. Money doesn't even come into it?

I've got a little bit of shocking news for you. Every single F1 driver swears! OMG!! I'd wager most of them drink and loads of them have tattoos as well. The difference is Kimi does it and couldn't give a st if you know or what you think. The rest are all humans hiding behind a software program called corporate robo-response v4.2

Hasn't Jenson Button more than once been caught swearing after the race just before they go on to the podium? hehe

I think it's good we get to see the drivers like that, makes them more 'human' as it were, rather than just the PR tool/advertising banner you see in interviews.

Kimi bumped into me in the paddock in Monza one year, I say bumped as we were both on the phone and he nearly knocked me over, spilling coffee all over the pair of us.. How we laughed about it... Seemed pretty down to earth to me...

I'm glad he's back, and seems to be on the pace where he should be.

I think he's driving brilliantly. Perhaps a touch beyond the abilities of the Lotus. Perhaps his time off shows most in the degragation of the tyres at the end of the race. Hindsight may suggest he should have taken it easier at times, but that's just the usual post-mortem smile

Good bloke who remains Kimi even when surrounded by corporate nonsense.

If you want to see it that way, that's absolutely fine. You miss some massive points, ie Kimi behaves differently from the other Finnish drivers of the past decades, and not many sports stars swear on live TV - and Kimi knew *exactly* what he was doing when he did - but if you like him that's fine.

Billions of people swear, drink and have tats, so I'm surprised to find it's cool to be no different from the rest. But hey-ho.

No he doesnt as I said before. There are stories about Keke from his Williams days which make Kimi look a lightweight. Both Keke and Mika arent averse to swearing on camera either. As to possibly the greatest Finnish driver of them all...Juha...well, just dont go there.

We'll have to agree to differ. I don't find Kimi the same as other drivers, Finnish or otherwise, at all.

For me, Keke could be charismatic, Mika very funny, Juha possibly a combination of both, whereas listening to Kimi is like watching paint dry for me, but there you go.

Manners cost nowt and they maketh the man, but for me Kimi seems to be without. And from my perspective, he doesn't deliver in the car enough either.

The woman holds out the folder, kimi walks into it as a child runs in and it hits the childs face. He then walks off as the kid lets out a yell of pain.

Sorry but if that was 90% of other people they would have taken five seconds to pick the kid up.

Did you watch the other one or just ignore it? Where he pushes a reporter over? I like some parts of Kimi's attitude, and don't wish for everyone to be a 'robot', but at the same time i don't think he cares much about anyone else.
