hornet said: So, Fizzy Pop 600 next then, or is that a race too far? So long as it doesn't end-up like the 2009 running http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Coca-Cola_600EDIT: As an aside, Danica Patrick wants to run the 500 AND the 600 in one day next year!

Well Indy trumps F1 today I reckon. Nice one Dario and lots of Wheldon tributes. Still a at Helio's close call with that tyre

Just got home from watching it in a friendly pub near me. What a race, and you have to love Sato for his bravery! Roll on 2013. Ovals rule!

Is there anyway of watching either the full race or highlights online? I feel like I watched the wrong race today. No Sky sadly.

Just got in from the race. What a brilliant day. We were in the SW Vista with views of turn 1 and 2 and I think every incident in the race (including Sato's final exit) happened in front of us and most of the passing. Felt bad for Sato as he had raced well but I felt from early on when Dario charged back through the field that he would nick it. The weather was v hot but the day was excellent. For anyone who hasn't been to the 500 it really is something else, especially in terms of the "event" and the crowd. And when those 33 cars come through turn one on green for the first time in the pack it is an awesome spectacle.
The Dan Wheldon tribute before the start was very moving and Dan was very much present at the race, from his image on every ticket to huge banners around the circuit. Indycar and the IMS paid fitting tribute to a great champion.

Heard on the TV coverage, drivers boots were melted to the loud pedal it was that hot in the cockpits.

A nice little race fact here:
"The race broke the record for the most lead changes in Indy 500 history as drivers took advantage of the tows created by the new DW12 chassis, first place changing hands 35 times."
Pinched from the Autosport website.

There's football on this year. and the olympics. And maybe someone not doing too badly at tennis. What would a 3 time indy 500 winner look like? (and dont forget Mcnish has a good chance of a 3rd le mans victory this year too.

Well if independence goes ahead, Scottish Sports Personality of the Year at least?! ;-) Between him and Annie Lennox I reckon!

The reporter just said that last year's race was marred by the death of Dan Wheldon!! They then went to highlight the early crash between Power and Connway. Dear Points of View, why oh why ...

What happened to the Lotus powered cars- could only see that Alesi last 10 laps.

Takuma Sato said: I saw a good opportunity coming out of Turn 4, getting a good tow from Dario and I was already down the inside before Turn 1. We were side by side and into Turn 1 he didn't really give me enough space. I was pushed down below the white line, way below the white line, so there is no grip and started sliding and lost control. Have to say that matches my first impression, he got squeezed. Bl**dy dangerous thing to do at those speeds. Perhaps Sato should have waited, but he had an overlap going into T1 and Dario should have been given him space.

Probably correct in the cold light of day, but would YOU give someone space on the last lap of the Indy 500 when you were on for your third win? Not sure I would. I can't believe Sato was expecting Dario NOT to defend? I can see why he tried it, but it was a win-or-bust call really, especially considering he had Dario for speed and could probably have got him before the final turn. At worst he threw away second place after a hugely entertaining drive.

The race is unique and the people of Indy love Brits. Nighlife is great leading up to race weekend. Best way to spend the late part of the night before the race is to sit on the grass outside Mike's bar on 16th st chugging cold beer and watching the bikers perform up and down the street.
