For people that have the sky coverage: Surely your brain is convincing you that the coverage is great because you have paid alot of money for the 12/18 month sky HD or sky sports package? Nobody is going to pay all that money and then say the coverage is crap are they? or am I wrong?
I changed from Virgin Media to Sky in March specifically to get the F1 coverage (wasn't going to pay an extra £22.50 to VM for the full Sky Sports package in order to get access to the F1 channel when changing to Sky +HD would only cost me an extra £1.50 on top of what I was already paying).

The coverage does have its faults, but is still worth getting IMO. Lazenby is wrong for the presenter role and is probably as awful as Rosenthal was at ITV, although not as smug. Georgie, Ant and that Sky Pad thing is just pointless filler material and provides nothing that couldn't be done with a full screen shot and a voice-over from Ted, like he did in his BBC days. Damon is OK but only whenever Johnny is there to bounce off. David Croft is a bit too shouty in the commentators role, but head and shoulders above Ben Edwards who I thought would be really good at the BBC after his days doing the commentary for Eursport, but instead has proved to be a massive disappointment.

I started watching the BBC build up (when they have the live races) and flicking to Sky for the race, but since Valencia I have found that I'm just sticking with the Sky coverage throughout and watching the BBC bits later on iPlayer.

Of course you can Anthony, you've been posting exactly the same stuff on three different forums for 12 months, your opinion has not moved a millimetre (for better or worse) regardless of any developments, news and info that has come out. No doubt when they do confirm SSF1 will be free for 2013 for SkyHD customers you will say that it will be under the SS subscription from 2014 and so on each and every year.

Still, the BBC could have relinquished their rights and let C4 have a go - FTA for everyone!
So what if my opinion has not been changed by all of the shiny stuff Sky have waved in front of us to try and get our custom. I am not a person that is fooled by the "Sky Sports Effect", I am not like a lot of people, I do know exactly what is happening, something that a lot of F1 fans didn't.
For me $ky $sports have not taken the coverage any further on that it was, they have in fact gone backwards, we actually see less track action on their coverage, thanks to the practice sessions being interrupted twice, once for adverts, and then so they can throw down to their camera to show that Lewis would not be going out anytime soon because he was sat in the back of the garage playing on his phone, something which could have noted with Ted talking over the world feed instead.

Sky SPORTS F1 was only made available via the HD pack because they realised that F1 fans were not willing to get Sky just for F1, and a lot of existing customers were not willing to add the Sky Sports pack just for F1.
They softened the blow by making it available with the HD pack for this year. It won't last long the clue is in the name.

You know you are forced to get the BBC, and sky is a choice? I suggest utilising that choice. Problem solved.

So it was a government conspiracy was it ?

I suppose the Government forced them in to spending £22m just on the rights for "The Voice" as well ? (which flopped to the point that a 2nd series was iffy).

Or the billion pound move to Salford ?

Or paying millions of pounds redundancy to a select few people they got rid of ?

Or are you just making up crap again?

Far as the "posh government" thing goes, I think you'll find the funding changes were imposed by Labour, not the current administration.
You do realise that the BBC budget is split up into sections, don't you?
The Voice will have made to no difference to the F1 coverage. That said, The Voice was a massive waste of money, the same goes for all of these so-called "talent" shows. The sooner they are all off of the TV the better.

This might just be a ploy to get people hooked and then follow through with a subscription. Sky have been doing such things since the early 90's.
They have, but these free weekends are usually when there is nothing big on, unlike this weekend.
It can't be a coincidence that this is happening right after the BBC has just shown two grand prixs live, and now are back to highlights for the next two races?

After the next two Grand Prix, German and Hungarian, the pattern is equal, with the remaining races being live on: BBC & Sky Sports, Sky Sports, BBC & Sky Sports, Sky Sports, BBC & Sky Sports etc

PS: Watched every race live since 1997 (except for some during the boring post 2000 Schumacher years) and I have to say BBC's coverage is fine this year. If anything their build-up for live races is too long. It should be half-hour build-up like MotoGP. I wanna see the racing and the reaction after the race, not the hype before it.
I have seen this a lot, one of my mates hated Sky Sports and was livid when the deal was announced.
He did eventually end up getting Sky, and now to him the sun shines out of their asses.

For me I am only paying £7.50 a month to get access to the channel, so I am not paying out enough money for that to cloud my judgement, even with paying this money each month, I still watch the races on the BBC whenever possible.

There is a reason for this. To get people to switch to Sky.
Would just like to point out to you that the prices for Sky Sports on Virgin Media charge are set by Sky, and Virgin Media make very little if anything from having having Sky Sports on their TV system.
It may only be costing you £1.50 more for now, the prices are set to go up at the end of next month, and then in the near future you (and the rest of us) will be stung into paying for the full Sky Sports pack anyway.
Either way you would have to pay £20 more.

You aren't forced to pay for the BBC either. You do not have to own a TV.
I actually do have pay TV, I choose to. I just am not being ripped off by Sky.

Sorry Rich, wasn't meant to be patronising. But then my statement didn't apply to you.
Those of us who come on forums know what we are talking about, I was referring to the casual fans.

I have access to sky that doesn't cost me a penny.

I watch the BBC where possible.

This is because Sky's coverage is appealing to the lowest common denominator IMO. Patronising, naive in the main and as low brow as you'd expect from them.

Quality is better than the BBC however in terms of surround and picture.

Would I pay them for it?

No.

And yet Sky seems to be far more technical, have vintage F1 races playing, and so on. All the BBC has is the 3 amigos, who are very good, it has to be said, but it comes across more as entertainment, than technical.

I've already checked and my bill will increase by £1.50, which is £3 less than the increase Virgin Media wanted off of me had I stayed with them in April, and then I'd still have to pay the £22.50 on top of that to subscribe to the whole Sky Sports package.

As for whether I'll get stung for the full Sky Sports package in the future, well, I'll cross that bridge if or when I come to it. It may be that if they decide to charge for it they will offer the channel separate from the rest of the Sports pack. It may be that people will have to take the whole pack. Hell, they might even make people do that, make every race Pay-Per-View and stick adverts in the races every 10 minutes. I don't have a crystal ball, so who knows what might happen?

Although it is less than the Virgin Media increase earlier this year, but then we are getting our Internet speeds doubled, the price increase is less than upgrading to the next speed tier anyway, so it is quite a good deal.
But then it is only this price increase that Virgin Media caused, having to pay £22.50 for the full Sky Sports pack on Virgin Media just for F1 isn't. Sky would let them have the channel on its own.

To sum it up, Sky is more boring. Even me, a massive F1 fan gets bored watching Sky Sports F1's build-up and wind-down programming, they spend loads of time talking about nothing, then they can't really have a decent conversation because they have to stop for adverts.
I tried to watch the F1 show too, but then that just drags on too.

Obviously Sky Sports F1 can show more vintage F1 stuff, as they have a channel to fill, unlike the BBC which uses a Red Button stream, that gets used for numerous different things.

Just seen an advert backing up what I said about the free Sky Sports this weekend. The first thing they mentioned was F1.

And what adverts are you talking about? I've watched quite a few of the sky races and can't remember any...happy to be corrected though.

He's talking about the adverts shown before and after the race.
