It certainly would be an interesting move for Lewis.

I don't think Lewis is totally happy at Mclaren and hasn't been for sometime. I don't think Lewis feels that Whitmarsh is very supportive of him, he clearly prefers Button.

Might be a good move if Lewis can build the team around him and become the number 1 driver, a bit like Alonso at Ferrari.

Sweet. pastor to mclaren please, i enjoied the repeated grimacing fthe carbon fibre layup man last season.

If he does go to merc, i predict a repeat of button's "follow the money, regret the total lack of success" for whatever the term of the contract is...

Webber & Hamilton to swap would be sweet if only Horner can treat SV & LH equally. Chances of that = zero. smile

Even as equal team mate to Kimi could work?

If Lewis goes, will he hold the door for Whitmarsh on the way out of Woking?

The only way I see this happening is if McLaren don't want Hamilton anymore. If he were to be pushed out of the team it's probably the safest and best place to go. I say safest even though we hear about the board not being happy with the team.

But that team has has 1/2 a season of being front running in it's entire lifetime. If lewis ends up Down the lower orders, he can expect to swap his daffy bint and the big black bloke with the gold for michelle mcmassive and vanilla ice...

I wonder if the BBC are looking for ways to drum up some traffic for their F1 site. Consider todays events:

1) Vettel is apparently a greater driver (already) than Alonso
2) Hamilton is apparently off to buddy up with Ross and Nico which, incidentally....
3) Is one of the biggest stories on the BBC News website.

Hmm. Fishy... or is it just me?

Maldothug to McLaren does not sound like a good idea to me. Personally a one way ticket back to Venezuala sounds like a better option!!

Would not be a bad move for Lewis TBH as i think he needs to get away from McLaren for his own sake. Di Resta to McLaren would be good move as well for all concerned so hopefully things will become clearer at Monza in a few days time.

2013 could be every bit as interesting as 2012 has been so far.

I was thinking that. Before Sky, the BBC site was pretty good but this year, I think I've visited it about 7 times. Having seen this story, make that 8!

Moving away from Mclaren would possibly reduce his sponsor commitments and leave him free to persue other personal ventures which Ron won't allow.

I've heard rumours (and bearing in mind who is girlfriend is & who is management teams other clients are) and quite strong ones at that, that there is a "Lewis Raps!" CD already cut and ready to go.

Ron has said not a cat in hells chance while you were work for me but maybe Mercedes are aiming for the yoof market?

What would you suggest? Who is out of contract for 2013 as well? Both Lotus drivers have 2 year contract. Williams is an okay choice and is a box tick team, but other than that, what does he do?

If, and it's a big if, this news item is true, then I welcome it for a number of reasons. Away from the McLaren cocoon that enclosed him from childhood, he will now have to stand alone on his own two feet. It could be the making of Hamilton as an even better overall performer both on and just as importantly, off the track. By the latter, I do not mean additional DNFs of which he has had more than a fair share of 'bad luck' although a good percentage were self-inflicted
Spot on... IF it happened, it wouldn't strike me as likely to be a great move by Hamilton personally, but... it would add another layer of interest for us fans - I feel a slight concern for the sport right now in that many of the 'best' drivers could be starting to spend almost their whole careers locked in with one 'winning' team - as exciting as I think it is right now, it would really mix things up and sort them men from the boys if there was a little more movement at the top!

Does anyone think that maybe it could be a good move because of the engine regs? Mercedes have made top engines so fsr and there's no guarantee of supplying a new v6 to McLaren (there were rumours of McLaren making their own engine). Maybe Lewis is thinking he wants a Mercedes engine for 2014 and the only way to guarantee that is to drive for Mercedes.

...or not.

Engine deal with McLaren ends next year.
McLaren have long been rumoured to want to make their own engine, might be the right time.
It is alleged Merc only want to supply their own team. At the same time there is apparently some thought to scaling down their involvement and renaming the team AMG F1, it seems they don't want a "full" works team.

Hmm - anyone who follows football will recognise a nothing story leaked by a sportsman's management to try and enhance their negotiating position outside of the transfer window when they read it. How this sort of rubbish ever gets passed off as news baffles me - it isn't even speculation, it is posturing.

Agreed, but given the things we like to speculate about between races with no apparent prompt around here, I don't think there's any harm in examining the 'what if...'s.

Anyway, seeing as everyone else (including those not even racing at the moment) is alleged to be replacing Massa next year, someone has to land at Mercedes! wink
