Schu has retired again

I'm with this exactly, though whether it's the right time to retire or not is up to him and the team principles, IMO. Schumy will know when he's had enough.
I didn't like him in his first career but he's won my respect with his second. I suppose the difference between me and Cider / WannaGotta is that even though I was never a fan of his the first time around, I never doubted that he was an extraordinarily talented driver, the most complete I've ever seen in F1. Just a pity he is also a cheat. He annoyed me because I thought he didn't have to cheat and he would still have been a prolific record breaker. I think that Cider / Wanna think that without the cheating he'd have maybe been a 1 or 2 championship guy or less. That's the difference.
Wow! I can almost completely agree with that! I didn't like him in his first career but he's won my respect with his second. I have been thinking about the 1993-2006 and the real sadness is that we don't actually know how good he really was. I have always acknowledged his talent, that has never been the problem. All the dreadful barging about, the TC/ barge board and FIA shenanigans at Benetton & Ferrari have cheated us all of the truth.
1998-2000 seems to me to have been the best of it, even with Bernie desperately wanting (?manufacturing) a Ferrari/MSC win. I was a Mika fan, not just because of my Finnish connections, but because he was SO honest and such a sportsman as well as being lightening fast and literally coming back from the dead. Those MK/MSC duals were magical. I still think Mika could have been a triple WDC if Mercedes had upped their game after that remarkable race at Spa in 2000, but they let him down, as many on here believe they have let Michael down recently. 1994 was awful, 1995 was very dubious and 2001-2004 were just plain boring apart from the scare Kimi gave them in 2003. I will give him 2000 despite all the nonsense at the end of 1999 season trying to manufacture a WDC for that prat Irvine.
Yes MSC could have been truly great, but instead of embellishing the unique stats, the poor character & behaviour of the man remain to diminish him, visible on video for all time.
I would like to retract something however. The initial quotes on the Beeb from MSC today seemed to particularly enhance my view of his persistence arrogance, but reading the fuller interview shows much more maturity and introspection. He even realises that as a human being you learn more from failure than supreme success. This shows genuine change and as someone who believes in the possibility of real redemption for individuals I was moved by his words for the first time - damn.
In the end his career, to me, is more tragedy than triumph. I really hope for two things for the next two months. One is that he and all his competitors come through the season safely and the second is that his farewell does not upstage the great and competitive season we are witnessing.

Best thing about his retirement is not having to read the same old BS from the same two people so frequently in the future.

That, I think, is what has changed my opinion of him. The soundbites we get from him when he's being interviewed after races. In the old days, on ITV, we never got any of that, he wouldn't talk to the ITV presenters. In the comeback, we got to see the human side of him, both in his lack of dominance on the track and in his attempts to make sense of events afterwards. So I could begin to understand what drives him, what he was thinking and how he was motivated, even if I didn't agree with the conclusions or the actions he took, now all of a sudden he wasn't the baddy in a mask anymore, he is just another guy who has a huge passion for motor racing. One of the greatest drivers to ever drive a car leaves F1... the sport is only going to be poorer for it.
Like all champs, he will have a lot of critics, I'm one if I'm honest, and I think it is right that he makes way at the end of the year.
There is though one aspect to this that find immensely to his credit, he tried...
Most leave the sport and become a pundit or similar, he left, got a good offer and gave it a go, we should acknowledge courage, even in our enemies.. to quote Lord Macaulays 'Horatio at the Bridge':-
"Curse on him!" quoth false Sextus, "will not the villain drown?
But for this stay, ere close of day, we would have sacked the town!"
"Heaven help him!" quoth Lars Porsena, "and bring him safe to shore;
For such a gallant feat of arms was never seen before."
It was an act of courage and I'd rather be seen as a Lars Porsena than a Sextus any day of the week.

Act of courage and at least he tried????? He was rumoured to be getting paid 15 Million a year to win races and develop the car. He has done neither but harm his legacy and cost Mercedes millions in his wages and re-building the cars he has trashed. Like all champs, he will have a lot of critics, I'm one if I'm honest, and I think it is right that he makes way at the end of the year.

You offer "Pundits" like Damon Hill or Brundle 15 Million a year to return into an F1 car and they will come running.
