Whilst I couldn't afford Sky TV (I'm a student) my parents back home have it, and thanks to the wonders of an xbox360 and Sky go, I can watch sky sports smile Any rugby fans out there bashing sky? Obviously not bothered by their extensive coverage of that, as well as super rugby and other southern hemisphere games...

Ok ok Sky isn't providing a quality service like the BBC were a couple of years ago. However surely we should just stop complaining and enjoy the fact it is still available to watch in someway or another? Like Top gear, it isn't exactly a review car show anymore, but surely it is better to have something vaguely related to cars than NOTHING at all?

Is anyone suggesting "NOTHING at all" is a possibility? F1, FOM and Bernie would have failed massively if they didn't manage to sell the TV rights to a UK broadcaster, given the size of the UK fanbase and the location of most of the team factories.

The funniest part of this thread, is the people who thing that Damon Hill is a personality....Ha ha!! *sides split*

Least favorite F1 driver and one who has such a complete LACK of personality....I'm sorry, I lost interest in even thinking about...erm...Damon Hill, I think he's called...

If Sky got rid of Ted 'me me me me me me' Kravitz and binned that God-awful bloody dreary theme tune ("Just driiiiiive...." The band lost the will to live at the end of that line and silence ensued..), it would be a genuinely good effort.

However, BBC seem to be able to create mood sequences for the start of each race, that are utterly fantastic. Sky - hire that team!!!!

People have short memories - F1 has always been dominated. Last season was the most open season I have seen in pretty much as long as I can remember. For so much of it, it was anyone's game. There have always been one or two drivers who nail the whole season (Prost, Senna, Mansell, Schuey, Vettel, Fangio, Stewart...). It's always been processional - to a certain degree. The refuelling era was by far the worst of my memory. No overtaking and places only swapped in the pits. It's really not like that anymore. It's much better.

Rant over..

It's derivative, boring and crap.
Just watch Moto GP to learn what good close racing and excellent coverage is.
Which moto gp races have you been watching in the last 3yrs!?.... Moto2 & 3 perhaps but 'close racing' and Moto GP haven't occurred together at the same time for years.

WSBK on the other hand.

I agree with all of this. BBC always seem to make the best of what they've got. Sky I don't like especially with their shiny shiny Sky Pad bks. Gary Anderson with a clipboard and pen is much better. Theonly BBC trait I don't like and Sky are also guilty of this is always going on about the British drivers even if they have an uneventful race.

Have you met Damon Hill?
No?
I have
Like his dad, a perfect gentleman, a real personality and someone who raises loads for charity.
I'd suggest you don't know him nor have met him, and therefore to 'shut up'.

I bit the bullet and took out the Sky Sports pack with the F1 channel. Totally against my principles but the BBC coverage is so woeful now and I do love F1, so it's ethics out the window and a full race callender live for me.

Although I can get Sky on my tablet, I don't bother as I'm irritated by 20 mins per hour of Ads and 'Believe in Better' reminders.
Did I hear somebody say Sky can cost nearly 2p per minute if viewing is an average of 4 hrs per day.
I had the choice of channels for F1 last year and preferred BBC. I wonder how the loss of Jake will affect coverage.

Watch it on the Sky Sports TV app, its 5 per month and you get all the sports channels, ok so its not a HD feed but its watchable and you don't have to sign up for 12 months.

Over the years, F1 has just lost its appeal for me.

I will watch it if it is on TV and I have nothing better to do.

In good news the WRC is back on digital TV bounce

I subscribed to sky sports (on virgin media) last year for the F1 coverage and then cancelled it again at the end of the season as I dont really care much for other sports except MMA which I get on ESPN and the odd boxing match which are always PPV anyway.

Last night I suscribed again as the F1 show and practice sessions were starting and Ive just got in from work to find virgin media have sent me a 'special offer' that if I sign up for sky sports again I will get the first three months at half price!!

Just gave them a call and it seems I cant take advantage of the offer now as ive already subscribed yeaterday.

OK I would only save 38 quid over three months but its obvious what they were doing sending it out three days before the F1 season starts again.

Bit annoyed with it all really as my standard monthly bill from virgin is now 95 which I feel is begining to take the piss.
^ this is part of the reason I binned Virgin - they are sadly out to screw their loyal customers. My monthly bill had got to around 80 quid (HD TV, films (not HD, that was extr), internet & phone), and considering no HD F1 channel - in fact, no F1 channel at all unless I shelled out another 30 quid on Sky Sports; I decided to bin the lot. I think I now pay 6 month for internet, and about 100 year phone line rental.

Yeah, I kind of miss watching F1, although it seems to be getting ever more gimmicky and contrived, I wonder how long it'll be before they go down the BTCC route of reversing a random number of grid slots based on someone pinning a tail on a donkey.

PS: Continuing the Virgin rant; when I cancelled, they offered me internet only at 13/month (no line rental), which beat TalkTalk by about a tenner. Took them up on the offer, then got a bill of 85, followed by a bill of 59. Told them to shove their bills up their arses & never darken my door again. Useless eejits.

Ye. Take that world! Also how dare you say anything about skys coverage when you don't even know Rupert Murdochs mum! Or something like that.

Also, what happend to the BBC "We will make sure we show all of the big races like Silverstone and Monaco!"...

I'm still going to watch, I'm not getting sky on the basis of not wanting all the other rubbish. If they did F1 only package (Which I would be willing to pay more for than an F1 upgrade) I might buy it, but I'm not going to suddenly get sky for 10 races and nothing else.

The quality of their coverage is also awful.
I couldn't disagree more. I was in the anti sky group before last season but after much tormentation from cousins with sky I had to upgrade. It was without a doubt the best choice the sky coverage is so much better than the BBC ever has for whatever reasons. I think the 30 odd a month is well worth it . Plus it's not just the f1 channel you're getting all the discovery channels are great. All the extra insight the sky team give with 4 ex drivers to hand is also great. All IMHO of course. Roll on Melbourne ! smile

Oddly enough I have always found Damon Hill one of the most intelligent and shrewd ex GP drivers- and one with awareness of and interest in the world outside the little bubble of F1. I don't watch Sky - I am allergic to most things to do with Murdoch - but from the interviews I have seen and read with Hill he is light years ahead of some ex drivers - who mentioned the sainted Nigel-in intelligence and , yes, 'personality'- whatever that means...

I was obviously being a little flippant about his charisma on screen as opposed to his ability to raise money for charity (an element that others missed, but ho hum!), but when faced with arguably more screen-friendly characters that exist in F1, I really find it's like watching a plank of wood talking about paint drying. There is a reason The Lion does not do F1...he is a boring old git on screen...but he's not off screen.

There has to be a balance between a watchable 'character' and a knowledgable person. We all know F1 is a 'geeks sport', but in this day and age where even I try and introduce new people to the sport (wife, kids, friends...) it's a tough sell when they get bombarded with wooden delivery of the statto side of F1.

One of the things that we all liked about BBC was how likeable Jake was, how out-spoken Eddie J is and how quick DC was to say, 'Hey Eddie - you're talking bks'.

I'd tune in to watch Eddie Irvine being a pit-lane pundit, that's for sure. smile

I'll watch some races, but I long ago gave up planning my weekends around F1.

I will be off to Silverstone (much as I dislike it as a venue) for the opening round of the WEC though, I didn't see a single live race last year, which is probably the first time in 30+ years! redface

Speak for yourself, he was the worst thing about the BBC's coverage by far imho.

He always looked like the Tea Boy who someone suddenly said "Here talk about F1 for five minutes" and, in the beginning especially, knew about as much!

No tears shed here for his departure to Soccer! biggrin
