So here we go, last race before the chase starts.

We're in Richmond.

Nationwide run tonight (Friday), green flag at 12:45am Saturday. Motors TV are showing the race at 9pm Saturday.
Cup run Saturday night, Premier Sports live from midnight.

They had fun during Nationwide practice yesterday as a torrential downpour flooded several race haulers and the NASCAR scrutineering bay, apparently enough to submerge the weight scales!

There are still places in the chase to be had;
If there is a repeat winner (or Matt Kenseth) Ryan Newman just needs to finish to make it, strictly speaking he needs to be 41st or higher, but a couple of start & parks will give him that spot, so I guess he'll just be trying to keep out of trouble.
If the winner of the race hasn't yet won this year Newman needs to finish 18th.
Biffle is in a similar position - he needs 22nd if there is a repeat winner. If the winner is a new one Biffle needs to outscore Newman by 19 points and finish ahead of Bowyer and Larson.

Both Bowyer and Larson needs good finishes - they both need to beat Biffle and each other to the tune of 20-30 points.

Of the rest, the following can make the chase, but only with a win:
Paul Menard, Austin Dillon, Jamie McMurray, Brian Vickers, Marcos Ambrose, Casey Mears, Martin Truex Jr., Tony Stewart, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Danica Patrick, Justin Allgaier, Michael Annett, David Gilliland, David Ragan and Cole Whitt.

Note that Stewart has been given a reprieve to make the chase if he wins here, the rules state that a drive must make every qualifying or race to be eligible, but given recent events NASCAR have allowed him a second chance.

There has been talk of Ambrose leaving the series, possibly to return to Australia, the situation is not helped by Stanley Tools moving their sponsorship to Carl Edwards's JGR car next year.

On the Nationwide side, if you hadn't heard Xfinity (a comcast brand) is to replace Nationwide as the series title sponsor from 2015, the deal runs for 10 years.

8 races still to go in the NNS series, its still pretty tight with just 54 points covering the top 5.

Thats about all!

So Richmond ran ok in the end, even if some fans got a bit excited and started climbing the fence(!)

First race of the chase in Chicago.

Nationwide run Saturday, MotorsTV are live at 8:30pm
Cup runs Sunday, Premier Sports are live from 6pm

Drivers in the chase are:
Brad Keselowski
Jeff Gordon
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Jimmie Johnson
Joey Logano
Kevin Harvick
Carl Edwards
Kyle Busch
Denny Hamlin
Kurt Busch
Kasey Kahne
Aric Almirola
A.J. Allmendinger
Matt Kenseth
Greg Biffle
Ryan Newman

The way this will work is every three races the bottom four drivers will be eliminated, this leaves 4 drivers who will go into the final round at Homestead with a chance to win.

All cars that are in the chase will sport yellow flashes on the splitter, windshield header and will have the car number in yellow on the roof.

Tony Stewart is swapping his entire pit crew with Kurt Busch for the rest of the season, Busch has had a fair few problems on pit road this year so with Stewart out of the chase it gives Kurt the best chance of decent stops.

Talking of Stewart, the investigation in to the death of Kevin Ward is complete and has been sent to the District Attorney for review, final announcement next week.

Great race last weekend, I really thought Larson was in with a chance, I'm sure he will be a champ one day. Huge bad luck for Aric.

Split schedule this weekend:
NNS are in Kentucky, they run at 12:45am Sunday morning. Motors TV are showing it on delay at 7am Sunday.
Sprint Cup are in Loudon, they run Sunday, Premier sports are like from 6pm.

Kvapil is moving from the #93 to the #83 and Clay Rogers will make his debut in the #93, this leaves Ryan Truex without a ride, should be for this race only, but who knows.

The Ward - Stewart thing drags on, last week the DA sent the case to grand jury - basically a jury will decide if Stewart has a case to answer or not. Next announcement may come later today.

Late notes:

Keselowski on pole.

Matt Crafton is on stand by for Bowyer as his wife is expecting their first child. Crafton ran in practice earlier.

Also earlier on Dale tweeted this:

It's 39 degrees @NHMS. No warning. No precautions made. Winter arrived like the creepy boyfriend your cousin brings to a family reunion. That was 4:45am this morning, its getting up to 65-70 (20 or so Celsius) during the day.

If I was a betting man I think I'd have a punt at him winning a race, he seems to be particularly strong, McMurray doing a decent job too, big change from just a year ago for Ganassi.

NASCAR have announced a whole raft of 2015 changes. There is a new part approval procedure - I assume to clear up some of the grey areas that people have been punished for this year.
They are going to do data downloads as part of pre race inspection.
Automated pit road officiating.

The big ones are:
Drop in horsepower to a nominal 725hp via tapered spacer
50lb weight saving
Reduction in rear spoiler height to 6" (reduces downforce)
Axle gear ratio drop to keep max RPM at around 9,000rpm
Roller lifters now permitted.
Optional driver adjustable track bar.
Rain tyres (!) for road courses..

General consensus is these are mainly small tweaks, of course the reduction in horsepower isn't liked but really its just pegging the cars back to where they are now given that the weight saving and lack of downforce will make the cars quicker. Nothing to say that they can't develop the engine with the spacer in place, so my guess is power will creep up again. The figure of 725hp is being reported, but this just comes from the reckoned average of 850hp this year. Realistically to be up front you're running 900hp, so with a bit of development they could easily be at 800hp next year. I don't think its a big deal.

In other news, if you don't follow the series closely or have missed a race for the rest of the season full race replays are going to be available on NASCAR's you tube account - http://www.youtube.com/NASCAR so if you've missed a race you can catch up. How's about that Bernie ?

I was surprised by the size of the horsepower reduction, since the 900bhp figure has been generally acknowledged for some time. While no aerodynamics expert, I'm not sure the spoiler reduction or small weight reduction will offset it that much. I'd rather have seen a bigger aero reduction and smaller bhp reduction. I always liked the fact the cars were ridiculously powerful for the amount of grip that they had.

But of course, I might be shown to be completely wrong the first time they hit a 1.5 or 2 mile track next year hehe

Big thumbs up for rain tyres for Watkins Glen and Sonoma. Just need it to rain when they go there now.

That was the consensus by drivers at Michigan test.

I guess the worry is that less DF = higher top speed.

Dover this weekend for Cup & NNS, Trucks are in Vegas.

Trucks run in the early hours of Sunday, no TV coverage.

NNS run Saturday, MotorsTV live from 8:30pm
Cup run Sunday, Premier Sports live from 6pm

This is the last race in this round of the chase, the bottom four will be eliminated. Brad & Joey are locked in already thanks to their wins, the other 10 places are up for grabs:

Newman, Hamlin, Biffle, Kurt Busch and Almirola all need a win.
Kahne needs 2nd and to lead a lap
Allemdinger, Kenseth, Edwards 2nd
Gordon 14th
Kyle and Earnhardt Jr 21st
Johnson 24th
Harvick 34th

All of the above (bar Kahne) can drop a place if they lead a lap or drop two if they lead the most laps.

In case you missed it, Stewart will not face charges over the death of Kevin Ward. A grand jury decided that Stewart's driving was not "aberrational", further to that toxicology tests on Ward found that he was under the influence of Marijuana to the point that judgement could be impaired.
The Ward family appear to be unhappy with this verdict and will probably launch a civil case for wrongful death against Stewart. He spoke to the press a little: http://www.thescore.com/nascar/news/588452 similar article here from Jenna Fryer, http://racing.ap.org/article/stewart-unsure-if-hel... - I knew he helped out small time racers, no idea it was to that extent though.

The Ward family appear to be unhappy and will almost certainly launch a civil lawsuit. How that replaces their son I don't know, but I guess everyone is different.

Kurt Busch starts his 500th race at Dover, thats a hell of a lot of swearing! The car will run a special scheme to celebrate.

Ryan Truex has left BK Racing, allegedly over money.

Jamie Little fans will be pleased to know shes moving to Fox Sports next year

Logano has extended his contract at Penske for at least 2 years, he'll race cup and some Nationwide events.

Kansas this weekend.

No trucks.
NNS run Saturday, MotorsTV live from 8:30pm
Cup run Sunday, Premier Sports live from 6pm

All eyes on the weather at the moment, current raining there and cold, forecast is 4 degrees for tonight and mid teens daytime. Meant to warm up for Sunday and get into the low 20s - possibly some rain but we'll have to see. They are also dealing with some winds:

Looks like practice and qualifying will be interesting in any case.

We're in the second round of the chase, so its all reset for the 12 remaining, they have 3 races, after which another four drivers will be eliminated.
The drivers left in are:
Brad Keselowski, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman.

Lots of liveries for breast cancer this weekend, Logano has even been painting the track at Charlotte pink!

Regan Smith has signed for JR Motorsports for another year in NNS.

Its was definitely a crazy race. They were all worried about "the big one" at Talladega before this one, they'll be pooping themselves about it now! I suspect most will race very hard at Charlotte to be safe.

If it does all go wrong for th eusual suspects Homestead is going to get very interesting.

Another great outing by Larson bar a couple of the restarts late on where he lost a couple of places.

Kyle has been a revelation.

Joey Logano has the Chase mojo and is on a bit of a roll. What a turnaround for the kid who looked massively over rated at JGR.

Charlotte this weekend.

No trucks.
NNS run tonight (Friday), race starts at about 12:45am. MotorsTV show the race 8pm Saturday
Cup run Saturday, premier sports are live from midnight, green flag 12:45am Sunday.

Lots of chase drivers want a good result here in case they get caught up in something next week at Talladega. We could see some pretty hard racing.

Bayne was meant to have his first race for Rousch at Charlotte in the #6, unfortunately he failed to qualify so has to sit this one out. Likely we'll see him in another race before the year is out though.

Sam Hornish Jr is to replace Marcus Ambrose, who is returning to Australia for 2015. Hornish will be in the #9, although there is some talk that Hendrick want the number to run Chase Elliot on a partial schedule next year (his dad, Bill ran the #9).

It looks like Toyota will unveil the 2015 Camry on Saturday to fall in line with the new road car model.

For those that watch Fox, Steve Byrnes has taken long term leave to fight a relapse of cancer, thoughts are with him.

There's a 60 point spread across the top 5 in nationwide, with Elliot leading by 38 points, just 3 races to go after this weekend.

Kenseth, Stewart and Keselowski exchange pleasantries after Charlotte , see above link.

Can anyone tell me why Jeff Gordon is pants at restarts ? Something he admits himself. I recall he made one good one some weeks back . The question is why?

I don't get Brad sometimes, seemed like he grew up a bit in 2012 but last weekend he was back to his old self. Stupid.

Anyway, he got a $50k fine, Stewart $25k. Hamln & Kenseth nothing.

Talladega this weekend, I think the chase contenders will be racing hard from the get go to stay up front. As I type practice is underway and they've been 4 wide already!

No Nationwide, Trucks run about 9pm Friday.
Cup race is Sunday, Premier Sports live from 6pm.

As a reminder, the bottom four from the chase are eliminated after this race, currently thats Kenseth (32 behind), Keselowski (50 points behind), Johnson (57 behind) and Dale Jr (also 57 behind). These guys basically need a win to get through.

Meantime, the legendary infield parties are all to come, this guy started early

Lets hope it doesn't end up like '86 where a drunken fan managed to steal the pace car and do a lap or two http://youtu.be/ICi3kIzSIZghehe

So, qualifying happened last night and it was errr.. interesting. the entire field played the 'after you' game and left it until the very end of the session to go out and set laps, some missed out, this ended up with Stenhouse, Allgaier and Sorenson not qualifying, Harvick and Stewart had to use past champions provisionals. Then Nemcheck's time was disallowed as it failed tech, letting Sorenson in.

Its just about the craziest thing you've even seen in NASCAR. The winner of it all ? Brian Vickers who landed pole. Of the chasers Jr is 28th, Hamlin is 38th, Kyle 40th, Logano 41st, Gordon 43rd. Kenseth starts from the back due to engine change, Keselowski the same for an alternator change. the others all all in the top 15.

Its going to be an even more interesting race now..

General consensus is the qualifying format doesn't work on plate tracks and they'll need to change it for next year.

As we enter the Elimination round in the chase NASCAR visits Martinsville this weekend.
Left in the chase after Talladega are:

Logano
Harvick
Newman
Hamlin
Kenseth
Edwards
Gordon
Keselowski

We now have just three races to whittle that down to 4 drivers who will go to Homestead with a chance to win the title.

No NNS this weekend.

Trucks run Saturday night, green flag is 6:45pm our time, I don't think there is any coverage.

The truck championship is still pretty tight with just 36 points covering the top 4, there are 3 more races after this weekend (Texas, Phoenix and Homestead).

Cup run Sunday, coverage starts at 5pm on Premier Sports - remember we have a clocks change this weekend, the USA follow next week.

At the latest roundy roundy at Stewart Haas the #10 and #41 teams are now going to swap places, everyone except the pit crews. Maybe they should just put names in a hat and pick out who does what each week?

Other than that not much news around, few sponsor deals and the like. If you want to see how the field is shaping up for 2015 its worth checking jayski: http://www.jayski.com/news/pages/story/_/page/2015...

Texas this weekend. All three series are out.

Trucks ran last night Kyle Busch won, just NNS & Cup race to get for the triple

Nationwide run Saturday, MotorsTV live @ 7:30pm
Cup run Sunday, Premier Sports @ 7pm

Kenseth has pole for the cup race and will probably be doing his best to avoid Harvick hehe. After a clash at Martinsville Harvick has vowed that Kenseth will not win the championship, pretty much saying he'll make sure Kenseth doesn't. Incidentally Harvick starts his 500th race this weekend and will he hoping for a strong race as he's 33 behind Gordon in the standings.

Stewart seems to be getting back to his old self, a strong finish in Martinsville and he's qualified 6th at Texas, hitting 200mph as he did so.

Larson had a bad time at Martinsville, apparently he doesn't like short track. He's qualified 17th at Texas, the odds must be on another top 10 ?

Obviously the Cup race clashes with the F1 race, just 200 miles away in Austin. Not smart on the part of race organisers, although NASCAR viewership has been in a bit of a decline it still utterly swamps that of F1. Obviously the NASCAR schedule makes it difficult to avoid a complete clash, but they could schedule the F1 race against a NASCAR race that is further away or better still, a Saturday night race. It would be to their benefit.

Earnhardt was at Homestead this week for testing. Pushing the limits? I'd say so

Only this race and Phoenix next week before four more drivers leave the chase. Can Ryan Newman keep up his great consistency to be in the top 4, even without a race win ? are the Penskes too fast to catch ? Will Gordon finally get another title ? Its all to be decided within the next month!

Thanks for the updates and information Crafty. I've watched every race thus far here in the Philippines via Fox sport, if only Jeff Gordon could restart like the opposition !!
Speaking of Gordon he featured in a CNN programme yesterday , only a 20 minute interview but long enough to see his enthusiasm hasn't diminished , he doesn't seem to popular here on PH but I've liked him from the begining when he was just a rookie, ....it's 6:20 am here as I write , Saturday morning and ironicly CNN now showing repeat of the Gordon interview.

Some great footage of him as a mustachioed youngster! Chatting to "The Intimidator " who labeled him the Wonderboy .
Gordon is the veteran now at 43 , I for one wish him the best .
