Great race?

Still pack racing and still a lottery.

Saying that I still watch it as there's something about a race car racing at 200 leptons.

Daytona and 'Dega should have one end of their banking lowered.
The overwhelming majority of NASCAR races are "pack" races. Cautions take care of that. It's not often that you get a two car dice for the lead on an oval.

yep, but that's good, isn't it? Gotta be better than a line of cars equidistant apart.

Yes , that's what I said , great race as I think that drafting at 200 mph in close proximity with your competitor , the cars twitching and moving around is a great spectacle .
Most NASCAR racing includes, as you dismissively label "pack racing " at some point , it's the nature of the circumstances .
Lottery ? Can you identify any racing that isn't a lottery .?

Phoenix this weekend, Cup & Nationwide, trucks don't run again until the end of March.

Nationwide live on MotorsTV 8:55pm Saturday
Cup live on Premier Sports 7:45pm Sunday

This weekend is the first outing with the new qualifying rules in Cup ( one 30 minute session with all cars on track, the top 12 then get an additional 10 minutes to set the starting positions).
Nationwide ran this format at Daytona, but it was cut short by rain.

Very little news this week, some sponsor deals and new liveries (Keselowski, Gordon).

Hopefully Phoenix will stay dry and we'll get races without any rain delays ! smile

Me and my big mouth banghead

From Jayski:

Weather could be an issue at Phoenix: A weather system moving into Arizona could cause problems with on track activities this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. The chance for showers increases late this afternoon with a 100% chance of rain overnight and a 70% chance on Saturday. The forecast for Sunday improves as the system moves out of the area. See more information at the Weather Channel and find more weather links on the Phoenix Race page - weather section.(2-28-2014)

No they're not.

Do they race in a large pack for the majority of other races?

Plate racing was better in the early 90s when the lead breakaway was something like 5 cars and getting the slingshot right was like a game of chess.

Help needed here please.

The Sprint Cup is the top series I think, so what is the Nationwide about. Different cars? Different rules? Which series is the Daytona 500 part of?

Confused? I am.........

This thread will help: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Sprint Cup is the top series
Nationwide one level down (think of it as F1 and F2 were years ago). Cars are slower in Nationwide.
Daytona 500 is one of the biggest races in the Cup calendar.

Trying to get into sprint cup this year. Didn't manage to stay up late enough for Daytona after the rain delay. Saw most of the Phoenix race though.

Must take serious nerves of steel to drive four wide at 180-190mph, serious trust in the others there. As a die hard F1 fan I like the simplicity of the cars too. Had enough of trying to explain exhaust blown diffusers and stuff.

First short track of the season at Bristol..

Nationwide runs tonight (Saturday), MotorsTV live starts at 6pm
Cup run Sunday, Premier Sports live from 4:30pm

After there have been concerns about cars on cool down laps in qualifying NASCAR have changed the rules:
Cooldown laps are now banned but the cooling apparatus can now be used in pitlane. This is largely a change to improve safety.

For stats fans we have Michael McDowell starting his 150th race and we could see Kyle lead his 10,000th lap in NASCAR. He needs to run up front for 140 laps.

Hamlin has taken pole for the Cup race with a new track record @ 129.991mph. He is followed by:
  1. 20-Kenseth
  2. 22-Logano
  3. 9-Ambrose
  4. 24-Gordon
  5. 18-Busch
It looks like we may have a weather problem on Sunday, I have seen a forecast showing it raining from early morning through into the evening, so we'll just have to take it as it comes.

Cup & NNS at the Auto club speedway in Fontana this weekend.

Will it stay dry ? lets hope so!

NNS is on Saturday, MotorsTV coverage starts at 8:30pm
Cup is on Sunday, Premier Sports coverage starts at 6:30pm

Matt Crafton sat in for Paul Menard today as he stayed home with his family & new born daughter, he'll be in the car Saturday for practice.

Jeff Burton is standing by for Kenseth, who is also awaiting the arrival of a daughter..

Practice speeds:

Driver Speed Time
Johnson 188.664 38.16
Gordon 188.511 38.19
Bowyer 187.774 38.34
Earnhardt Jr 187.740 38.35
Keselowski 187.003 38.50
Harvick 186.645 38.57

Cassill apparently had a car failure, hit the wall in T4 and may have to go to the backup.

A few pics to brighten the thread up:

Driver defies gravity:

Fontana:

'65 Ford Galaxie of Junior Johnson:

Junior entered his fast NASCAR race in '53, driving an Rocket Oldsmobile at Darlington. The day didn't go well, he got involved in an accident and was classified 38th. It did earn him $110 bucks though!

He raced for another 13 years, 313 races in total, 50 wins, 148 top tnes, 46 pole laps. In 1965 he finished 12th after 36 races and 13 wins, the last at North Wilksboro was his last ever win, he retired in '66. As a team owner he won the championship 6 times with Cale Yarborough (76-78) and Darrel Waltrip (81, 82, and 85). He continued as a team owner until the mid nineties and was inducted in to the NASCAR hall of fame in 2010.

I like Fontana, it's a truly vast venue at 2 miles long and about that wide all the way around! hehe

I also like the new qualifying now they've sorted the cooling-down laps issue, makes an event of something that was single-car before... (Sounds awfully like the evolution of F1 qually)

The Nationwide race was fantastic indeed. I think either Larson, Busch or Harvick could have won that race – it was just a case of catching lapped traffic in the wrong place, getting loose on a seam etc.

Larson drove so well, but he threatened to win at Bristol for the past two years. He seems to love battered race tracks where you gotta search from the bottom to the top for grip.

It was great to hear the drivers having to modulate the gas so much on corner exit – please, nobody repave Fontana until the surface literally breaks up…

Last year’s Cup race was perhaps the most entertaining of 2013, with the added horsepower of the Cup cars compared to Nationwide it should be a belter.

About 15mins to race start. Hamlin out with a sinus infection, Sam Hornish sitting in.
Logano to the back - trashed the car in practice.
Menard, due to not being there on Friday
Truex also had a crash in practice.
