Well, going on what happened here when the cycle races (including the Olympic ones, during which the Olympic rings defaced Box Hill and as a result of which there's now some daft sculpture on a roundabout on the A24) happened, the local economy suffered immensely as a result of hosting these events and there has been a huge and concerted effort, which I support, to prevent it happening again. If you want to go and race, the UK is full of circuits. Roads are NOT for motorsport!

RoverP6B sounds awfully like a self-centred whining bh. I used to live in Matlock Bath and couldnt get in or out of the damned place at the weekend for more than half of they year, but didnt complain.

Of course, had Bobby Bell been stuck too then I may have seen it differently...

Well said. But by the same token might I suggest that you show some forbearance for those motoring enthusiasts and eccentrics who wish to gather and run their machines on your local road perhaps once a year. Have a look at the Shere Hill Climb participants : old Jags, Astons, MGs, Triumphs, you get the picture, don't seem like such a bad bunch probably fall apart on a race track. Do on and reply to the consultation and say things like plenty of notice, access in emergencies, no commercial sponsors, free biscuits and the like. Due to the costs there will never be a fraction as many motoring events as cycling ones and we all have to put up those so practically it wont make much of a difference except to the participants to whom it will mean everything.

Says who?

I'll be honest, when you mentioned the Olympics, I thought you were joking? I mean, why would anyone be so down on an event that will most likely only ever occur once in their lifetime? So what if some well wishers wrote on the road surface of Box Hill? It's a road, not hallowed ground! It'll soon wear off, if it hasn't already?

Funny, I always thought thats where motorsport started. Circuits happened when they decided some roads were so good for motorsport that they closed them more permanently instead of just temporarily.

You need to take a long hard look at yourself, until you see what we see.

Exactly!! It's how Motorsport started; the first great races were from town to town. The most famous Rally stage is a public road; from Moulinet to La Bollene-Vesubie, aka Col de Turini. The TT Races are on public roads. I could go on.....

Only in the UK mainland are public roads not for Motorsport (apart from the Jim Clark Rally) - and hopefully this will change. Just look at some of the European Hillclimbs - awesome events; look at the Ypres Rally...both bring the crowds out in thousands. If done correctly, this could be a massive boost to British Motorsport, and hopefully to Rallying.

If you're a Motorsport fan - then get filling the form in!!

I think we should ask for an add-on to this proposal that the very first event to be run on public roads in England be held on RoverP6B's road. A 24HR endurance event would be perfect. Miserable sod. smile

Could we all please remember that when we talk about closed roads rallying that the Tour of Mull/Mull Rally is recognised as well as the Jim Clark? The Tour of Mull was the first rally on UK closed roads and while it is an island I would still refer to it as mainland as it is subject to the same laws as the rest of Scotland. It's my understanding that the Mull organising team were key advisors to the Jim Clark team in gaining the relevant Act of Parliament when they decided to go tarmac.

Mr. P6B I respect your right to an opinion, but to state you are a DRIVING enthusiast NOT a motorsport enthusiast? A little peek in your garage and I beg to differ! You probably don't live too far from me, I hearby give you an open invitation to come and try a few of my motoring toys and see if we can get some enthusiasm up for you!!!! :-)

I hadn't forgotten the Tour of Mull, which why I said UK mainland - but I take your point.

The 'news' about a London GP is hi-jacking the bigger story... Which true to form the F1 writers have fallen for.

more motorsport can only be a good thing in my opinion and there are some cracking roads near me that would make good hillclimbs

How about a Bala to Vyrnwy "Sprint": http://goo.gl/maps/qY9b6

That'd be pretty good. The hotel at Vyrnwy would get booked out I suspect. Leave one side of the lake open to walkers etc.
