All mine were spec side, you really shouldn't be intimidated by the fences it is quite easy to shoot through them although a long lens does help.

Here's one that was shot through the fence and today got a half page to itself in Autosport so paid for my ticket and petrol.

I had my old Fuji, 18-300 bridge camera with me, I'd left my new Canon at home due to the weather (turned out to be the right call!) so I couldn't try shooting through the fence. Nice shot - right place, right time, and if you didn't crop, superb framing.
