Tony Stewart causes crash, opponent gets out to remonstrate and ends up being hit and killed. Doesn't look good.

WOW, what a wreckless thing to do, getting out of his car and running into the track is the last thing he should have done, it looks like the driver who hits him swerves towards the guy but I think its actually when he hits him the driver going under the wheels jerks the steering that way.
ETA: Sounds like, from the witnesses, the driver nailed the throttle (probably intending on covering the guy on track in gravel), but actually hit him with the cars back wheel.

The title of the topic is misleading. It should say something more along the lines of "Moron decides to protest accident by walking down the track during race - The world's down a dumbass".
Really, WTF kind of mentality does it take to not recognise that at the best of times these aren't the most manoueverable cars?
I have no sympathy for people who do such idiotic things.

Yup it was dumb, but tony didn't exactly slow down for the yellow and try to avoid him.....Really, WTF kind of mentality does it take to not recognise that at the best of times these aren't the most manoueverable cars?

...yellows mean slow down and be prepared to stop, not rev the car next to the other driver, getting the tail out and killing him....tony should have been going slow enough to be able to control his car and avoid the driver
Lots of experts it seems!
Dimly lit track, black race suit, black helmet, Stewart following another car around that jinks to the left to avoid the guy on the track, and Stewart is behind - the witness saying it was a deliberate act was a friend of the deceased, the Police, per last report, say no charges are currently being filed.

Just a thought after watching the video but the driver on the track starts running away from the car just before the contact and then you hear the engine rev and he appears to steer to the right.
I wonder if Stewart could see he was going to hit him and was trying to drift the back end away from hitting him.

Add wire mesh "windscreen", so also dirt on visor. Stewart would of known the car was stranded at the side but not expecting the driver, dressed in black as you say, to be walking into the path of oncoming cars. This in-car footage shows how much visibility there would have been;

Ward was incredibly reckless in getting out of his car and walking across the track while the race was still in progress, but judging by the video on youtube, Stewart appears to make no effort to slow down or take evasive action. That is only one view of the incident from one angle, however.
It doesn't look good for Stewart.
It doesn't look good for Stewart.
I cannot comprehend why he got out - these cars race in very low grip conditions and lose traction easily.
But, you cannot look past the fact that Tony Stewart has much more experience in racing than Ward did - thus, the former's perceived actions are equally indefensible. Two drivers making mistakes, and one lost their life.

Plus driving a 650-100bhp twitchy car on a dirt track. Dimly lit track, black race suit, black helmet, Stewart following another car around that jinks to the left to avoid the guy on the track, and Stewart is behind.
Very sad for all involved.
Ward gets out of his car and moves closer and closer to the inside of the track
All cars take the inside line as usual but Stewart appears to aim at Ward; Stewart is renowned for being a hot head in NASCAR.
However witnesses in a YT video description say Stewart swerved into Ward http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qILmIyG6qno

The track immediately went yellow after the Ward hit wall because the cars slowed up.

It sounds as though he hits the throttle twice, first at 33secs then lifts off and hits the throttle again almost immediately.Ward gets out of his car and moves closer and closer to the inside of the track

Perhaps trying to intimidate the guy on track?
