NASCAR Rednecks

We went to Charlotte NASCAR last year and it fulfilled all expectations. It certainly isn't Goodwood but without exception people were amazingly welcoming , wherever they stood on the social scale. The curious thing about Nascar (and I guess F1 these days ) is how totally uninterested many spectators are in other forms of motor sport . It also isn't all fast and furious until race day/night - qualifying was terrific but was watched by two men and a dog compared to raceday .
Lots of guys in old yellow schoolbuses on the infield , semi submerged in a sea of burgers and beer , including the apparently legendary sofa man - who has lots of distressed sofas on the roof of his bus. As I say, not like Goodwood at all..

I went to a race in Richmond on 9/11. It was fairly redneck but also a patriotic overload due to being 9/11 with fire brigade unveiling enormous stars and stripes and F22 flybys.
I spoke to some locals but they weren't interested in any other motorsport aside from NASCAR.
It was good fun but I do regret not hiring the pit-car radio to listen in and also regret not buying the vile fluoro green Nascar/F22 event t-shirt! They were selling the left over stock for $5 each. It was one of those t-shirts that was so bad it was good!

I expected it to be far more feral than it actually was; very much a family occasion and whilst beer was a feature for many I have seen more idiots at BTCC races recently. No pit lane fight though - now that was a disappointment. Best bit is the noise- especially when I got up close during qualifying; it was like listening to a WW2 fighter at very close range and very high speed. The racing is OK - but so utterly different to road racing it's daft to compare them really . Overtakes can last a couple of laps and obviously no outbraking; not much opportunism either - you can see the move being planned . Oddly enough we had some yellows about 3/4 through a rather humdrum race -'debris on back straight '. Obviously. Spiced things up though
First time I went to Talladega, someone detonated a stick of dynamite during the fun and frolics the night before the race.
Also, the number of burning sofas and police barricades gave the infield an almost post-apocoliptic atmosphere on the Monday morning afterwards.
It is a real eye-opener. No other venue on the NASCAR circuit gets anywhere like as OTT as Talladega in the spring-time - though local law enforcement have been a little more proactive in recent years.

Will be going by myself so do you think motorhome or tent.
RV might be a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Finding one to rent in Birmingham AL will be tricky around race weekend and driving one from ATL might not be very cost effective. That said, I wouldn't want to tent it either - though thousands do.In your situation, I would compromise and rent a full-size SUV (Suburban will do the job nicely). Big enough to accommodate an air bed, your booze-cooler and a couple of single-use barbecues. Added to which, you can lock-up your valuables when you are not around and benefit from the a/c if it gets toasty.
One year I went it rained like a sonofabh the day before the race and the infield resembled Passchendaele November 1917 - being in a tent would have been quite miserable.
